In early 1903, the Sizaire brothers (Maurice and Gorges) and Louis Naudin joined forces to build and sell a car of their own design. The car was quite powerful with its "big" single-cylinder engine of 120 mm bore and 110 mm stroke and more than 1.2 litres of displacement for a total weight of 600 kg. The transmission, however, had trouble handling the torque of the "big single", and the first customers had a hard time. For the good reputation of the young brand, this had to be remedied: Maurice Sizaire therefore developed a new transaxle, a direct three-speed transmission. At the same time, the front suspension evolved with an exclusive system of independent wheels that ensured perfect road holding. These innovations, which appeared in the summer of 1903, brought rapid success to the company, which moved to new and vast premises in Courbevoie. The price of the cars was too low, however, and the company's finances soon faltered. It was bought by the Duke of Uzès, who put his colours on the emblem: a red and blue pennant on a white background with the letters SN. The fame of Sizaire & Naudin nevertheless increased with the first victories in races (Coupe des Voiturettes organised by the Auto-Journal, in 1906, 1907 and 1908, Targa Florio 1907 and numerous world speed records). Maurice Sizaire developed a racing model nicknamed the Monstre, with a huge 250 mm stroke engine to circumvent the 100 mm bore limit. At the beginning of the 1910s, the costly and unproven development of a 4-cylinder engine caused chaos in the company and the Sizaire brothers and Louis Naudin were dismissed. The company was finally liquidated in 1921. During this time, the Sizaire brothers tried their luck overseas again with a certain F.-W. Berwick. But that is another story.
The F-Type we are presenting is one of the very few surviving cars of the brand, and one of the only ones in working order and regularly entered in rallies. It is the 8 HP Sport model with "2 bucket bodywork" as indicated in the period catalogue, equipped with the famous 1,244cc single-cylinder engine. Its history is known since 1975, when it was found in the hands of a Dutch enthusiast, Mr de Vaal, who restored it cosmetically. In 2003, Christian Mullaert, a great Belgian collector, bought it and started work on the broken and incomplete transaxle. One of his friends, also a connoisseur, bought the car from him shortly before his death and completed the difficult mechanical restoration. The car is complete with fenders and spare wheel, and in superb working order. As starting a single-cylinder engine of this size is quite dangerous, the car has been fitted with a discreet Mini starter to make the manoeuvre easier. A rare opportunity to acquire an iconic, high-performance "single-cylinder" from the early days of the automobile.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
