Among the earliest Cobras to be completed at AC Cars' High Street works in Thames Ditton, the car offered here was invoiced to Shelby American Inc. on 30 November 1962, the accompanying document describing a roadster "cellulosed in Black with Black trim, top, and tonneau, built to specification dated 17 July, 1962, and summarized in letter dated 8th November, 1962." A cold air duct is listed among the extras, together with special packing for the windscreen and delivery to the docks, and the finished car left the works on 12 December 1962.

Shipped to Los Angeles for completion at Shelby American's facility, CSX 2058 was invoiced onward to Downtown Ford at 7th and Wall Streets on 22 February 1963. The car itself accounted for $4,995.00, to which were added wind wings at $13.97, front bumpers at $23.97, rear bumpers at $26.97, sun visors at $15.04, and chromed exhaust tips at $4.25, the invoice totaling $5,129.20. By some margin the costliest single option, at $50.00, was a louvered hood, an extra specified on only a handful of Cobras and one which, with its five rows of four louvers set at the trailing edge of the panel, remains the most immediately identifying feature of the car today.

Chassis CSX 2058's earliest recorded owner was Richard Feldheim, a New Jersey resident then working in Southern California, who in correspondence with a later custodian recalled having bought the Cobra secondhand through a Los Angeles Times classified advertisement in 1964. It was the hood louvers, he wrote, that first drew his attention, and he paid in the region of $4,400 at a time when the newly introduced 289 cars were advertised at more than $6,000. Feldheim took his purchase to the Shelby shop to have it road tested and was assured that it "ran as well as the 'new' 289s."

During Feldheim's tenure, the Cobra was fitted with an aluminum high-rise intake manifold and a 715-cfm Holley carburetor and was run at drag strips in California and Arizona. The 260 was rebuilt during this period, and the original leather was replaced with black vinyl and the body resprayed in 1966 Corvette color Mosport Green. A second engine rebuild was entrusted to Ak Miller in California, after which Feldheim flew west and drove the Cobra home across the country.

Feldheim consigned the car to the Philadelphia dealer Kirk F. White in 1971, and White's letter of 20 September that year to Dr. Bill Hancock of Memphis, preserved in the history file, offers a frank account of the Cobra as it then stood, reporting 24,000 miles which he believed original and mechanical condition he judged "excellent," against a list of minor cosmetic flaws. Dr. J. F. "Bill" Hancock bought it that autumn and retained it for a decade before passing it to his adopted son, Steve Eubanks, also of Memphis.

When the Cobra was appraised in September 1996 it remained in Mosport Green over black upholstery, riding on chrome wire wheels and carrying an eight-quart Aviaid sump, with 33,600 miles indicated, and Eubanks reported to the Shelby American Automobile Club registrar that the original engine remained in place. He offered the car late in 2002, whereupon the SAAC World Registry notes that it passed briefly to Paul Andrews of Moorestown, New Jersey and, in August 2003, to Henry B. Wilkinson of Asheville, North Carolina.

Early in 2004, with some 36,000 miles recorded, CSX 2058 returned to England for the first time since leaving Surrey forty-two years earlier, acquired by Robert "Bob" Jewers of Brentwood, Essex. Jewers restored the car to its factory Black and registered it "11 GXW," exchanged in 2007 for "111 CSX" and from July 2009 for the single-figure mark "1 CSX," all documented in the file. He used the Cobra as its makers intended, writing to Feldheim that it was in regular service and had lately been driven to Goodwood, and it was that exchange which recovered so much of the car's early Californian history firsthand. In March 2012, Classic Cars placed CSX 2058 on its cover and paired it with an AC Ace to open the magazine's fiftieth-anniversary celebration of the model.

The Cobra moved to continental Europe thereafter and was registered in Belgium on 29 May 2015 at 41,397 miles, its present owner shortly afterward committing the car to a thorough program of mechanical recommissioning. The 260 cu-in V8 was removed in 2018 and dispatched to an English engine builder, where it was rebuilt to original specification and returned the following year. The transmission and differential were rebuilt in 2020, the rear hubs and bearings renewed, and the pedal box overhauled, all of it supervised by Atelier de l'Artisan in Belgium, whose detailed reports, invoices, and photographs occupy a considerable portion of the history file.

With summer touring and occasional circuit use in mind, the same workshop addressed the car's cooling, adding a larger radiator fan switchable from the dashboard, an oil cooler, an insulating spacer beneath the carburetor to defeat vapor lock, and LED bulbs to ease the load carried by the original dynamo.

CSX 2058 is offered today in the menacing Black over Black in which it left Thames Ditton, showing a believed-original 42,949 miles and accompanied by a history file of impressive depth, among it copies of AC's invoice to Shelby American, Downtown Ford's invoice X-213, Kirk White's letter of 1971, correspondence with the SAAC registry, Feldheim's own recollections, the English registration and MOT record, the Classic Cars feature, two binders of invoices, and a notebook in which the present owner has logged in his own hand every outing of the past decade. Delivered with an option almost never specified, accounted for at every stage of a sixty-year life, and mechanically renewed under current ownership, CSX2058 is as complete an example of the 260 Cobra as one could hope to find.
