The unmistakable body style for this unique 1954 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Limousine was the brainchild of American inventor Joseph J Mascuch. The New Jersey resident tasked Alfredo Vignale in Italy to craft the one-off coachwork, resulting in the four-headlight design and reverse rake for the retractable rear window. Displayed at the 1954 motor show in Turin, chassis number LCLW14 was delivered in mid-1955.
The details of this car are perhaps even more noteworthy than the overall shape. To improve visibility for the chauffeur in his black leather-lined cabin, the Spirit of Ecstasy is kneeling. For Mr Mascuch, seated in the grey passenger compartment, he could broker deals from the inbuilt telephone before retrieving a bottle from the gold-plated toilet-cum-champagne cooler under the seat cushion. Catering for Mr Mascuch’s tastes, Rolls-Royce painted the block of the straight-six and various ancillaries green and chrome-plated many of the pipes in the engine bay. Stored for some time by Mr Mascuch, the Silver Wraith was later owned by prominent Michigan collectors Richard and Linda Kughn.
A most extravagant and wonderful creation, this Silver Wraith has been with the consigning owner since August 2014. While it will require mechanical recommission prior to driving after a period of static display, from there on it is guaranteed to turn heads wherever it glides.
