Very few examples of the high-performance Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental were bodied outside of England. Among the exceptions was chassis 106PY, offered here, the only Continental bodied by the revered French coachbuilder Fernandez et Darrin, and bearing unusually sporting lines with their trademark tapered and swept door handles. It was originally delivered to Lieutenant Marshall Owen Roberts, son of a wealthy New York businessman, who had subsequently moved to England and there enjoyed a distinguished military career. Rolls-Royce build records, copies of which are on file, indicate that the car was delivered to the Tower of London, where Lieutenant Roberts was stationed at the time.

Subsequent owners included a Mr. Ward, after which the car moved across the Atlantic and in 1962 was listed with the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club by Dr. Richard W Poytress of California. Afterward it journeyed to Australia, and in 2006 was acquired for the present collection. Presented in older restored condition, with some notable wear to the paintwork on the wings, roofline and scuttle, it is accompanied by the aforementioned build documents as well as other historical information from the Rolls-Royce Foundation and excerpts from relevant reference books. A superb, truly one-off example of the Continental, one of the great Rolls-Royce models produced between the wars.
