The special feature of this Gordini is that it is owned by Bruno Saby, and was driven by him in the Monte Carlo Historique in 2019. It belonged to André Froment, one of his close friends, for 19 years, and when Froment died in 2018, Saby bought the car from the family in order to participate in the prestigious event that he had won in 1988. Bruno Saby has told us that today, when he takes part in regularity rallies, he chooses to drive cars he has a real emotional connection with, for professional and personal reasons.
In an interview about this car for the magazine R Racing, he recalls that, in order to take part in the event, the car underwent eight months of work : the shell was sound but the engine, gearbox, shocks, silentblocs, pipes, brakes, heating…everything needed checking or overhauling. As he says in this article " for a rally, nothing should be left to chance, everything must be made reliable. "
However, he and his team resisted the temptation to take the preparation further. " We deliberately stayed faithful to the original. This is a Group 1 car, as it always was. We simply added harnesses and head-rests, " he recalls. Held back by a snow plough near St-Michel-Les-Portes, Bruno Saby was not able to put in a good finish but he is keen to stress the reliability of the car, in which only the wiper motor showed any weakness.
This R8 Gordini is not only set up perfectly for regularity rallies, but belongs to none other than a former winner of the " real " Monte-Carlo : a true benchmark !
