The Renault R5 Turbo was unveiled at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show. The manufacturer wanted to use standard production models as a basis for developing variants specifically destined to compete in rallies and race series for groups 3 and B. Its engine is that of the R5 Alpine with the addition of a Garett T3 turbo, enabling it to produce 160 bhp, while not weighing much more than the basic model. The 1982 Paris Motor Show saw the launch of the Turbo 2, which was mainly a cosmetic facelift for marketing reasons and offered a greater range of options so that clients could personalize their vehicle. The level of performance was maintained, as was proved by successes in national and international competitions. But because the price was high and the car was demanding to drive, production was discontinued in 1985. With only 3200 cars made, the R5 turbo 2 was always quite a rare model and has become even more so with a low survival rate, owing to the number of cars that have been the victims of the overoptimism of their drivers.

The model we are presenting was put into service on May 05, 1983. The current owner acquired it in 1990 when it shown 65,000 km on the clock. Its engine was completely rebuilt in 2003 by a R5 Turbo specialist, the meter then displayed 73,000 km. He received a Cevennes kit increasing his power to 200 hp. The car has since participated in various rallies in the VHRS category. In 2015 during the Historic Giraglia its crew hits a curb and the car lies on its side. Major bodywork work is then carried out, the car will be completely repainted. In 2017, the front seats were completely refurbished and the car went to the bench, which revealed 203 hp at 6500 rpm. Before the sale, an oil change was carried out and the fuel supply system was completely revised. Today credited with 83,000 km, our appraised copy at €80,000 in 2017 will be sold with 4 white Speedline rims. At the wheel, we discover a high-performance and dynamic car, the characteristic whistle of its turbo engine takes us back to the mid-1980s. Presented today at an interesting price, this R5 Turbo is a great opportunity for all model enthusiasts.

This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Lyon, France, on November the 9th, 2019.
