The Rambler Javelin of 1970 was headlined as one of the toughest looking vehicles on the market and a true milestone for AMC. Featuring a newly designed facelift, it stood separate to its previous releases to shed its economy car image and appeal to a more youthful, performance-oriented market.
The front end had been redesigned with a longer hood with a wide twin-venturi front grille and new rear end with full-width taillamps. This was a one-year-only design making them a very rare sight on Australian roads.
The Australian Javelins only came with top trim levels and features that included the powerful 6.4L 390ci V8 engine boasting an impressive 325Hp. Paired with its factory 3-speed automatic Shift Command and Twin Grip limited-slip rear differential that offered performance, comfort and luxury.
Having had an older respray in its original Signal Red and fitted with period correct Dragway 5 spoke wheels offering a tough muscle car look. Its chrome work has been re-done and presents very well.
On the inside the interior showcases the best of a pre-70's design.
A black vinyl interior finished beautifully over a woodgrain dash and steering wheel and is true testament to how luxurious these examples were.
All these high-end features made the original sales price to be considerably higher than other market rivals such as Holden's Monaro and Ford's GT's resulting in poor sales with only 258 examples produced by AMI here in Australia.
With such low production numbers this makes them a rare and desirable collectable.
Accompanying this vehicle are original registration papers, insurance documents, Javelin brochure as well as the American Motors original owner's manual.
A true icon to its time, this Australian example is a rarity and will make a sound addition in any classic car collection.
