The 1933 Railton was the first and best of the Anglo-American hybrids: it was inspired by Reid Railton, well known in later years for his work on Napier Railton cars for John Cobb, one of which took the World Land Speed Record in 1938/9 and 1947, the other one recording the fastest ever lap at Brooklands of 143.44 m.p.h. in 1935. The basis of the Railton was a modified Hudson Terraplane chassis, fitted with the straight 8 4.2 litre Hudson engine; this first produced 113 bhp. @ 3800rpm, but by l939 this had increased to l32b.h.p. The car was assembled in the old Invicta works at Cobham, and bore a more than passing resemblance to that car, with a very similar radiator grille and rows of rivets along the bonnet.
