- Fondée à Annecy par Maruis Dal Bo au milieu des années 1960 , la marque Pygmée reconnaissable à son logo orné d’un hippocampe est spécialisée dans la fabrication de monoplaces. Ce petit constructeur artisanal fabriquera des formules pilotées par 7 pilotes de F1 dont notamment Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Patrick Depailler ou encore Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Commençant par la Formule 3 en 1965, la première Formule 2 apparait dès 1969. Rattrapé par la dure réalité économique de la compétition automobile, l’aventure s’arrêtera en 1973.
- Conçue pour la saison 1971, la MDB 16 est basée sur la coque de la MDB 15 de 1970, le jeune ingénieur suisse Jean-Louis Burgnard réalise un nouveau châssis et propose une nouvelle architecture pour les suspensions. La règlementation moteur 1600 cc étant toujours en vigueur la MDB 16 conserve le 4 cylindres Ford Cosworth FVA à injection Lucas associé à une boîte Hewland FT 200.
- 2 châssis seront fabriqués et seront inscrits à 10 épreuves du championnat. Des problèmes de chauffe moteur en début de saison vont contraindre l’écurie à modifier la carrosserie en plaçant le radiateur à l’avant. Le meilleur résultat fut obtenu par Jean-Pierre Beltoise sur le châssis 271 lors du Grand Prix de Rouen, il termina à la 3ème place derrière Peterson et Lauda.
- Au cours de la saison 1971, notre châssis 171 aura été successivement piloté par Patrick Dal Bo, le fils de Marius, Helmut Marko et Jimmy Mieusset. Dès 1972 elle participe au Championnat de France de la montagne pilotée par Richard Daniel qui gagnera notamment les courses de Murs et Bellegarde, il terminera 7e du championnat. Elle renouvelle sa participation en 1973 avec Daniel Gache qui gagnera l’épreuve de Cagnotte. On la retrouve à la fin des années 1970 avec Daniel Boccard à son volant.
- Son actuel propriétaire en fait l’acquisition en 2005, elle a depuis bénéficié d’une magnifique restauration, plus de 100 000 € ont été investis en 15 ans, elle se présente aujourd’hui en excellent état tant cosmétique que mécanique. Accompagnée d’un passeport FFSA et d’un PTH valide en circuit et course de côte, cette superbe monoplace est prête à reprendre du service !

- Founded in Annecy by Maruis Dal Bo in the mid-1960s, the Pygmée brand, recognisable by its seahorse logo, specialises in the manufacture of single-seaters. This small, traditional manufacturer built formulas driven by 7 F1 drivers, including Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Patrick Depailler and Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Starting with Formula 3 in 1965, the first Formula 2 appeared in 1969. Caught up by the harsh economic reality of motor racing, the adventure came to an end in 1973.
- Designed for the 1971 season, the MDB 16 was based on the hull of the 1970 MDB 15. The young Swiss engineer Jean-Louis Burgnard designed a new chassis and proposed a new suspension architecture. As the 1,600 cc engine was still subject to regulations, the MDB 16 retained the Ford Cosworth FVA 4-cylinder engine with Lucas injection and a Hewland FT 200 gearbox.
- 2 chassis were built and entered in 10 championship events. Problems with engine overheating at the start of the season forced the team to modify the bodywork by moving the radiator to the front. The best result was achieved by Jean-Pierre Beltoise in chassis 271 at the Rouen Grand Prix, where he finished 3rd behind Peterson and Lauda.
- During the 1971 season, our chassis 171 was successively driven by Patrick Dal Bo, son of Marius, Helmut Marko and Jimmy Mieusset. In 1972, it took part in the French Mountain Championship driven by Richard Daniel, who won the Murs and Bellegarde races, finishing 7th in the championship. It took part again in 1973 with Daniel Gache, who won the Cagnotte race. It was back again at the end of the 1970s with Daniel Boccard at the wheel.
- Its current owner acquired it in 2005, and since then it has benefited from a magnificent restoration, with more than €100,000 invested over 15 years. Today, it is in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically. Accompanied by an FFSA passport and a HTP valid for circuit and hill climb racing, this superb single-seater is ready to get back into action!
