THIS CAR
Evoking motorsports glories recent and long past, the Carrera GT was an instant darling of supercar enthusiasts when it entered production in 2004. Inspired by the manufacturer’s triumph at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Carrera GT employed space-age construction techniques and materials, such as a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic tub, based on the Le Mans-winning GT1’s architecture. The tub weighed only 220 pounds and, according to Porsche, made the car stiffer than a caged 911 RSR race car despite the fact that the Carrera GT has removable roof panels. The car also used F1-style pushrod suspension and forged titanium connecting rods. Still, the design also referenced motifs of old, with fenders and a roofless cockpit reminiscent of Porsche’s 1950s sports racing Spyders. Inside, it was even equipped with a shift knob made from birch and ash, recalling those used in the legendary 917, which were designed to combat heat transfer from the gearbox.

As the example no. 942 of 1,270 cars built, chassis 001466 was constructed in May 2005, and is one of 644 cars that were specified for the US. Finished in GT Silver Metallic and trimmed with Natural Dark Grey leather upholstery and black carpeting, the color brings to mind the original concept car and allows the eye to follow its well-proportioned lines.

Owned by a succession of collectors in New York, this Carrera GT has been very well cared for. A previous owner sourced a luggage set in the contrasting color of Ascot Brown to replace the original set, and conducted several rounds of major maintenance, including a full engine-out service in October 2014 that provided new coils, water pump, fluids, and filters. In 2013, a clear bra was applied to the front fascia, and in June 2016 the rear main seal was replaced as well as the clutch. An annual service was also performed at that time.

Displaying approximately 5,150 miles at the time of cataloguing, this magnificent Carrera GT invites its next owner to indulge in the purpose-built V-10’s astounding performance and intoxicating exhaust note, one of the greatest in the automotive world. The Carrera GT embodies a unique combination of high technology and vintage sensibility, famously forgoing the computerized stability-control systems that characterize most of its contemporaries. The combination of a stiff Le Mans-derived carbon tub, F1-derived V-10, and six-speed manual gearbox result in one of the most exciting road cars of all time. This carefully maintained, low-mileage example has been road-tested and would make a perfect acquisition for Porsche connoisseurs, modern hypercar enthusiasts, or simply anyone interested in the art of engineering and performance.
