The Porsche 914 arrived on the market as the result of Porsche and Volkswagen sharing engineering development for a mutually beneficial platform developed in the 1960s.

Both companies were looking to launch their own unique sports car, allowing VW to have the four-cylinder version, while the six-cylinder 914-6 would be for Porsche.

Plans changed however when Porsche’s quest for perfection and attention to detail led to a much higher priced platform, one that VW could not see matching their product line. This, coupled with political changes at the helm of VW, resulted in Porsche taking on both cars as part of their lineup.

The 914 /6 is now regarded as the 914 with the strongest character – most likely because of the use of the classic six cilinder engine.

All 914 chassis bodies were manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück. The body was later sent for completion by Porsche in Zuffenhausen

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

The Porsche 914 /6 in question is an exceptionally special one, being the press car of Porsche Great Britain in 1970.

The car was built in November 1969 and the first registration was recorded by Porsche Cars GB on May 13th 1970. Porsche GB promoted the car in several magazine at that time: CAR 1970, Motor German Cars 1970, Road Test Motor 1970 and many more. All original magazines where the car appeared in are available with the car.

In 1971 Mr. Duncan bought the car, who became the second owner.

The third owner decided to repaint the car to Ivory white, as it would gain more attraction to their showroom. In 1987 the car was sold to its fourth owner, Mr. Kevlin.

In that same year, the car was sold to Mr. Fagan, an Englishman living in the Netherlands.

Mr. Fagan was a perfectionist and only wanted to the best for the car, so the car was then brought to Roger Bray, a marque specialist when it comes to classic Porsche restorations. At Roger Bray the car was completely taken apart and undergone a thorough restoration.

When the restoration was finished the car was brought back to its original colour combination.

On June 9th 2015, Mr. Fagan sold his beloved project.

Amongst the beautiful condition of this car we can say that this car is unique in it’s sort. Having a car with such a huge history file and such an impressive restoration documentation is fantastic.

It’s great to see how much history comes with the car.

The car comes with many invoices that clearly show how well this car has been taken care of.

With all history and invoices also comes the original service booklet and manual.

As the car was once Britain’s press car, the car comes with many magazines in which this Porsche appears.

And because it was the UK press car, Famous Formula 1 racing drivers such as Graham Hill and Jacky Stewart have driven this specific example.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

Today this 914 /6 presents as a handsomely restored example reflective of factory specifications.

The Signal Orange paint is glossy throughout and properly applied with smooth coverage on the exterior surfaces, underside panels, and doorjambs.

The paint shows no significant areas of road use in the front of the car and along the rocker panels where typical scuffs or scratches might appear.

The fit and finish is excellent with appropriate panel fit to the hood, doors, Targa roof, and deck lid.

Black painted areas, rubber, and exterior finish are also in excellent condition.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The interior has been beautifully restored using correct materials and correct factory components.

The seats, door panels, and surrounding trim are correctly finished and in beautiful condition.

Dial faces are clean, clear, with vivid color indicator needles.

The engine compartment is cosmetically and mechanically correct. No modifications has been done to the engine or gearbox and also these parts are in a very nice restored condition.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The six cilinder horizontally opposed engine gave he 914 /6 the performance it deserved. This engine was already tried and trusted by Porsche, having it used in the cheaper 1969 911 models.

The engine was fitted with a 3-way carburetor; one for every three cylinders.

Performance-wise, the 914 /6 is quite impressive. The six cylinders gave 110 HP at 5800 RPM and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.8 seconds.

Obviously one can enjoy the very distinguished sound of a starting Porsche six-cylinder, giving that extra thrill.

Once underway, one can feel that the 914 /6 feels much quicker and more agile than its 4-cylinder sister. Being a mid-engined car with rear-wheel drive, the car is a lot of fun to throw around in corners.
