By the late 1960s, Porsche was in the midst of changes that would define the marque for a generation. The company needed a compact sports car to replace the 912 that would meet ever-increasing federal safety regulations and attract younger buyers. Porsche also wanted to use its experience from the mid-engined 917 to diversify from its traditionally rear-engined layout.
The 914/6, unveiled at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show, was a low-slung, mid-engined sports car which featured a lightweight Targa roof and pop-up headlights. Its reputation was enhanced by a Works-prepared GT version, which came sixth at Le Mans in 1970 and was campaigned at Daytona, the Nürburgring, and Sebring. Just 3,300 914/6s were sold, and flat-six production ceased after four years.
Completed at Porsche in May 1970, this rare 914/6 was finished in Ivory over a black leatherette interior, just as it appears today. This six-cylinder Porsche was prepared for the US market and equipped with fog lights. A recent owner-compiled documentation binder relates this car’s history and maintenance. Records show that this 914/6 was purchased in Novato, California in March of 1985 for $8,500. It then resided in Sun Valley, Nevada from at least 30 April 1985 to early 2010, when purchased by a Victoria, British Columbia Porsche collector. There are over 150 pages of receipts from restorative work performed in Nevada between 1985 and 2007. The past owner stated, in the 914 World forum, that he took the car right down to the bare tub in the process of restoring it.
In 2012, a new clutch was installed, the flywheel was resurfaced, and a service was performed at Chris’ German Auto Service in Bellevue, Washington. A compression test at that time showed consistent high readings from 150 to 160 psi across all six cylinders. Around the same time Rudi & Company, of Victoria, British Columbia were contracted to perform a full repaint, re-chrome the bumpers, install new window glass, and to source and install a correct radio.
Fitted with Fuchs wheels, and presented in its striking original color combination, this 914/6 retains its matching numbers six-cylinder engine. In addition to the history binder, the car is offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and original manuals. These nimble, yet powerful 914/6s are a true Porsche creation and are not to be underestimated. They deliver the kind of driving experience one would expect from this iconic automobile manufacturer and are increasingly sought-after by enthusiasts. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am22.
