The Porsche 912 was produced from 1965 to 1969 and was designed to be the economy variant of the more famous Porsche 911.
It was put into production as if to anticipate the release on the market of the legendary and captivating Volkswagen-Porsche 914.
The success of this car was not the worst, thanks to its aesthetics, similar to that of its older 6-cylinder sister and the very advantageous list price.
The Porsche 912 differed from its “sister” 911 in the engine, namely the air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer of 1584 cm³ with 90 HP of the latest Porsche 356 SC and in the interior which was very simplified. It kept the coupé bodywork (and since 1966 also the plate) and the rest of the mechanics.
Performance was modest, but low consumption compensated.
Its production ceased at the end of 1969 to make way for the 914, however in 1976 a small series of 912 E with 2-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine (of Volkswagen origin) with 86 HP injection was produced for the North American market.

La Porsche 912 è stata prodotta dal 1965 al 1969 ed è stata concepita per essere la variante economica della più celebre Porsche 911.

Fu messa in produzione come per anticipare l’uscita sul mercato della mitica ed accattivante Volkswagen-Porsche 914.

Il successo di questa auto non fu dei peggiori, grazie alla sua estetica, simile a quella della sorella maggiore a 6 cilindri e al prezzo di listino molto vantaggioso.

La Porsche 912 differiva dalla “sorella” 911 per il motore, ossia il 4 cilindri boxer raffreddato ad aria di 1584 cm³ da 90 CV dell’ultima Porsche 356 SC e per gli interni che risultavano molto semplificati. Ne conservava la carrozzeria coupè (e dal 1966 anche targa) ed il resto della meccanica.

Le prestazioni erano modeste, ma i consumi contenuti compensavano.

La sua produzione cessò alla fine del 1969 per far posto alla 914, tuttavia nel 1976 fu prodotta una piccola serie di 912 E con motore 4 cilindri boxer 2 litri (di origine Volkswagen) a iniezione da 86 CV per il mercato nordamericano.
