"Carrera RS" : say these words to a Porsche enthusiast and their face will light up in a broad smile. No wonder, as this is one of the most prestigious evolutions of the 911. It was the first real " competition-client " version of the 911 and has been one of the most successful in competition. Today, it is still considered to be one of the best 911s ever built. The Carrera name, used for the most powerful 356s, came from the Porsche class win in the 1953 Carrera Panamerica and RS stands for " Rennsport " or competition sport. To develop this machine, the constructor relied on a tried and tested formula : reducing the weight and increasing the power. Added to this were aesthetic modifications, such as wider rear wheel arches to accommodate large wheels. Aerodynamic improvements to the car included a rear " duck tail " spoiler, that became the car's signature piece. For the interior, clients could choose between a " Touring " finish similar to the 911 S production model, or " Lightweight ", which was more stripped out to reduce the weight further.
With a design suitable for both road and track, the Carrera RS met with unexpected commercial success. By the time the doors opened on the 1972 Paris Motor Show, where the car was presented for the first time, Porsche had already taken 51 orders for the lightweight version. By the end of the show, the 500 examples needed for homologation in Group 4 had sold. The final production numbers exceeded 1 500 examples, allowing the Carrera RS to be homologated in Group 3 (Touring) where no other car could match it. Following this incredible success, the model evolved with new features and in line with sporting regulations, maintaining the " competition-client " tradition that few other marques could claim with the same regularity. This was undoubtedly one of the reasons for the current success of the constructor.
The car on offer was the 440th built, making it one of the highly sought after first 500.
According to the Porsche Italy Spa certificate, production began on 1 August 1972 and the Porsche dealer in Italy was invoiced on 1 January 1973. It was delivered in 'tangerine' (code 2323), with black imitation leather interior. It remains in this very desirable configuration today. It has the original options of heated and tinted rear window, retractable radio aerial and loudspeaker. The current French owner bought the car in 2007 and carried out a full restoration to the body and running gear. The car was completely dismantled and the chassis stripped, with the work carried out near Cuneo in Italy by a racing Porsche specialist. The engine was fully serviced rather than rebuilt. This is a superb example offering a wonderful opportunity to buy one of the first 500 examples of the RS, eligible for many historic events such as Tour Auto.
