Few images evoke the 1980s more vividly than a 930-generation Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet cruising through a music video or episode of Miami Vice, bathed in neon light and embodying the decade’s indelible style.

Launched in April 1975, the 930 Turbo married a turbocharger to the 3.0-liter Carrera RSR flat-six engine, a combination that delivered a substantial increase in power and top speed over the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera. In 1978, the Turbo’s engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters, gaining even more power and an intercooler. Withdrawn from the US market in 1979 due to tightening emissions standards, the Turbo returned in 1984 with advanced electronic engine management. In 1987, Porsche debuted the Turbo Cabriolet, pairing open-air motoring with hair-raising performance.

This superb US-market example was ordered through Vasek Polek Porsche in California to be picked up at the factory in Stuttgart through the Tourist Delivery program. It completed production on 30 March 1987 finished in an attractive triple-black color scheme that is perfectly suited to the car’s iconic design. Factory-installed features included a power-operated top, limited-slip differential, steering wheel with raised hub, black tonneau cover, Blaupunkt Reno stereo, and an alarm. Kept mostly in California and for a time in Oregon, the car was meticulously maintained by its first owner, as confirmed by service invoices dating back to 1987.

Recent mechanical and cosmetic attention includes a comprehensive engine-out service in 2014, during which the rear main seal, clutch, and flywheel were replaced, alongside recommissioning of the ignition, turbo, and throttle systems. Further refurbishment in 2020 included conversion of the air conditioning system to R134A refrigerant, cleaning and recoating of the fuel tank, underbody rust repair, installation of a new catalytic converter, and replacement of the smog air pump.

Desirably cloaked in triple-black, this 1987 example of Porsche’s iconic open-top Turbo presents a compelling opportunity to acquire a finely preserved and meticulously maintained specimen, offering the perfect blend of performance, luxury, and unmistakable 1980s flair. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo25/.
