Meet the legend: the Porsche 930 Turbo
Step back in time and let yourself be spellbound by the legendary Porsche 930 Turbo, a car that did not just redefine the benchmark for sports cars but became an icon of motorsport in its own right. This singular addition to the HooG Selections collection embodies the pure essence of Porsche's racing heritage. Born in Germany and delivered in June 1976, this 911/930 3.0 Turbo stands as a symbol of an era defined by groundbreaking engineering, uncompromising performance and timeless beauty.
The birth of an icon
Porsche's fascination with turbo technology reaches back to the late 1960s, when the marque began experimenting with turbocharged racing cars. The iconic Porsche 917/30 Can-Am, a monster of a race car with well over 1,100 bhp, quickly proved the potential of forced induction. In 1972 Porsche set to work on the 911 Turbo, partly as a homologation model to test the technology in production cars, in keeping with FIA regulations that required road cars to be made available to private buyers.
When the Porsche 930 Turbo arrived in 1975, it was an outright sensation. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with KKK turbo produced a formidable 260 bhp, making it the fastest production car of its day. Its iconic flared rear arches, vast "whale tail" spoiler and uncompromising driving experience meant it was instantly recognised as a car equally at home on the road and on the track.
Racing the 930 Turbo
Although the 930 Turbo was originally developed as a road car, it did not take long to find its way onto the circuits. Porsche built the 934, a racing version of the 930 Turbo, purpose-made for Group 4 competition. With its 3.0-litre turbocharged engine producing more than 480 bhp, the 934 dominated the FIA Group 4 championships and claimed the prestigious Trans-Am Series in the United States.
For the even more extreme Group 5 racing, Porsche developed the 935, an aerodynamically honed version of the 930 Turbo that would go on to rule long-distance racing in the late 1970s. With brute force, a low nose and an enormous rear wing, the 935 became all but unbeatable. Among its triumphs was the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, cementing its place as one of the most successful race cars of the era.
A rare beauty
The 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo, distinguished by its silver-grey metallic exterior and rare interior with a singular combination of chequered cloth and leather, is a true feast for the eyes. After years of faithful service in Germany, this beauty found her way to the Netherlands, where under the expert guidance of HooG Selections she was restored to perfection. Every detail now breathes the glory of a bygone age.
The evolution of the 930 Turbo
Following the introduction of the 3.0-litre variant, in 1978 Porsche developed the 930 Turbo 3.3, a more powerful version with a larger engine and an intercooler that lifted output to 300 bhp. This model swiftly became a favourite among purists and collectors, thanks in no small part to its improved reliability and performance. Production of the 930 Turbo continued until 1989, when it was succeeded by the Porsche 964 Turbo, but by then it had long since made its mark as one of the most respected and coveted sports cars in the world.
