Porsche's homologation model for entry into GT2 racing

Porsche is no stranger in making special homologation-series production cars, thinly disguised with some modern amenities that masked a racing monster underneath all of the carpet and leather. While the German car company had done this with the 964 Carrera RSR 3.8 and the 964 Turbo S2 before (potent racing adversaries and fantastic street cars), Porsche set its eyes on the GT2 category using the newest 911, the 993, as its base. What resulted from Porsche's precision engineers was one of the most memorable and performance-oriented 993 road cars ever made: the Porsche 993 GT2.

The GT2 moniker was born with the 993, a special project developed by Weissach's racing engineers. Built to be lighter, faster, more powerful, and supremely competitive, the 993 GT2 took the racing-car-first mentality and ran with it. While prior iterations of homologation cars (Carrera RS, 964 RS 3.8, etc) from Porsche looked like slightly reworked versions of the base model, the 993 GT2 by comparison looks menacing. An aggressive front splitter, riveted fender flares to accommodate special Speedline wheels, and an intense rear wing with special intake ducts positioned for maximum airflow, directing cool air to the twin turbochargers. An aluminum hood and doors helped remove excess weight from the car along with a spartan interior. Making a stout 430hp and 398 lb-ft of torque from its twin turbo 3.6-liter flat six engine and with an impressively low curb weight of 2,850 pounds (with a full interior), its power delivery and handling is nothing short of awesome!

The interior of the GT2 was made with simplicity in mind, removing what wasn't needed and keeping the bare minimum. Composite bucket seats were utilized, rear seats removed, with lightweight carpeting throughout the cabin with minimal sound deadening materials. Lightweight door cards, manual windows, door pulls instead of handles, and others were all things that were thoughtfully included to ensure that the GT2 was as light as possible while still feeling unique and like a luxury sports car.

Porsche built 193 road-going GT2s, easily surpassing the homologation requirement for the racing car. The GT2 racing version proved to be a formidable opponent, quickly becoming the GT2 car of choice and began dominating championships worldwide, including the BPR Championship in Europe and the IMSA Sports Car Championship. In 1996 and 1997, privately entered 993 GT2s at the 24 Hours of Le Mans took class wins, with the 993 GT2 eventually even challenging the superior GT1 race cars to outright wins.

This 993 GT2 was completed at Porsche on June 13th, 1996. Originally built for the Japanese market (per the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity) it was optioned with air conditioning, a high amperage battery, reduced radio preparation, green graduated tint windshield, and Michelin tires. Finished in Porsche's stunning Speed Yellow color over a black interior with black/grey leather seats, this GT2 was reportedly delivered to a Japanese customer via Japan's most famous Porsche agency and importer, Mizwa Motors. Believed to have been with a single owner while in Japan among a collection of more than 50 cars, it remained there until being imported into the UK briefly before coming to the United States in 2016. There the GT2 completed EPA and DOT testing while service was also performed on the car, with documents showing the EPA and DOT process as well as service items performed.

The GT2 remained with this owner until being acquired by the most recent owner in Southern California in late 2019. He had the car serviced by TLG Auto in Los Angeles after the car first arrived, and then was subsequently sent to Canepa in early 2020. Upon a thorough inspection at Canepa, the owner and Bruce Canepa decided that it would be the best for a car of this caliber to have a complete cosmetic restoration, with the sole intent being returning the GT2 back to as-new condition, just like it would have left from the Porsche factory. This would include a complete concours-quality repaint of the factory Speed Yellow color, a reupholstered interior, a comprehensive mechanical servicing of all systems as needed, and a complete cleaning of all surfaces and parts, ensuring that nothing was left untouched.
