Since its inception in 1954, the Porsche Speedster has followed a simple recipe of two seats, a low, curved windscreen, and a minimalist folding fabric top. Envisioned by American importer Max Hoffman as a more affordable entry in Porsche’s lineup, the original 356-based Speedster, with its steeply raked, removable windscreen, stripped-down interior, and streamlined body, was an immediate success. Porsche revived the nameplate for the G-series 911 Carrera 3.2 Speedster in 1989, and the tradition continues to this day with new Speedsters launched periodically.

In 1993, three years into type-964 911 production, Porsche reprised the Speedster again. Based on the Carrera 2, it featured the usual recipe of a steeply raked and lowered windshield and a minimal, manually operated cloth top intended for occasional use in inclement weather. Like the 1989 version, it also had a fiberglass tonneau cover concealing the rear of the cabin for a streamlined look. The suspension and 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six engine, rated at 247 horsepower, carried over from the Carrera 2. Fewer than 1,000 are believed to have been produced.

The 1994 Speedster offered here is one of only 469 allocated to the United States. It completed production on 27 September 1993 and was sold to its first owner on 9 November 1993 at the Porsche dealer in Parsippany, New Jersey. The Speedster appears to have remained in the Northeast most of its life, having been registered in New York and changing hands at least once before moving west in recent years. The Speedster was periodically serviced at Greenwich Porsche in Connecticut through July 2019 before being sold to another private collector. By November 2020, the car was in California, at which time it was serviced and refreshed by Porsche Palm Springs Classic Department with 51,446 miles logged, according to entries in the car’s warranty book. Collector Todd Blue purchased it for his significant Porsche collection to complete his Speedster set several years ago.

The Speedster still wears its factory-correct Cobalt Blue Metallic paint, ordered through Porsche’s “Paint to Sample” customization program. The car came with a Black Leather interior from the factory. It has recently been upgraded with a Porsche Classic radio and was optioned with cruise control, and air conditioning with full climate control. Other factory equipment includes headlight washers, a five-speed manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and 17-inch Cup wheels.

Still presenting in attractive condition and showing only 51,748 miles at cataloguing time, this 911 Speedster is highly compelling, exquisitely specified in a custom paint finish with a luxurious leather interior, and among the rarest type-964 variants in existence. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo23.
