The 911 Dakar honours Porsche's first overall victory in the 1984 rally from Paris to Dakar, won with the 953. That win also marked the birth of all-wheel drive in the 911. The Dakar takes the 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat-six from the Carrera GTS, producing 480 ps and 570 Nm, sent through an eight-speed PDK to all four wheels.

What sets it apart is ground clearance. As standard, the Dakar sits 50 mm higher than a 911 Carrera with sports suspension, and the lift system adds a further 30 mm. With 191 mm of clearance it achieves ground clearance and ramp angles normally reserved for an SUV, and that raised level remains usable up to 170 km/h. Two driving modes are exclusive to the Dakar: Rallye, with rear-biased all-wheel drive, and Offroad, which automatically sets the car to its raised level. Both modes feature a dedicated Launch Control that allows up to 20 percent wheel slip, so it can launch hard on sand and gravel. The Pirelli tyres are the first all-terrain tyres ever developed for a series-production Porsche. Porsche built 2,500.

Fun fact: despite its all-terrain tyres and raised ride height, the Dakar lapped the Nordschleife in a time on par with a 996 GT3

Avec 191 mm de garde au sol, elle atteint une garde et des angles ventraux normalement réservés à un SUV, et cette position haute reste utilisable jusqu'à 170 km/h. Deux modes de conduite sont exclusifs à la Dakar: Rallye, avec une transmission intégrale orientée vers l'essieu arrière, et Offroad, qui place automatiquement la voiture en position haute. Les deux modes disposent d'un Launch Control dédié autorisant jusqu'à 20 pour cent de patinage, pour des départs à pleine charge sur sable et gravier. Les pneus Pirelli sont les premiers pneus tout terrain jamais développés pour une Porsche de série. Porsche en a construit 2 500.

Anecdote: malgré ses pneus tout terrain et sa garde au sol rehaussée, la Dakar a bouclé la Nordschleife en un temps comparable à celui d'une 996 GT3.
