The Porsche 997 (2004-2013) succeeded the 996, which had famously revolutionized the flat-six, air-cooled 911 series with the development of a new chassis to accommodate a water-cooled engine. This radical change in powertrain was a response to environmental concerns, emissions, and noise regulations. The 997 departed from its predecessor’s exterior and interior styling; despite being slightly wider, the car was more visually akin to its classic predecessors with a return to pre-996 Carrera oval headlights and classic looking interior. Larger wheels helped with increased power and performance, although the technical difference was only slight. The car remained low, helping with a drag coefficient.

The 997 was launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year and was succeeded by the 991 in 2013. A new platform meant the car had a sleeker body, with raked windshield, available in coupe, cabriolet, speedster and targa bodystyles. The turbo was introduced in 2006 and featured a revised front bumper, with its fog lamps moved to the corners. The extensive use of aluminium resulted in a turbo that was 90lb lighter than its predecessors.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is considered by many enthusiasts to be the ultimate 911 incarnation, having been launched in 1974 with an impressively powerful 3L flat-six engine with single turbocharger developed from the RSR racer. The Turbo had originally been designed as a homologation special to qualify Porsche for the Group 4 ‘silhouette racing’ formula. With a formidable reputation for excellent performance and exhilarating acceleration both on the racetrack and road, demand for the turbo was high in the 1970s and, due to engineering advancements through the years, has only increased in value and popularity. The engine’s design was derived from the 911 GT1, rated at 437hp and 457 lb/ft torque; the 5-speed Tiptronic variant can reportedly accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. The engine was the first Porsche production car to use two BorgWarner VTG turbochargers, which were fitted with a two-stage resonance intake system.

The 997 features the optional high-tech Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) calipers in yellow, which decreased weight by 37lb compared to the standard brake system and had exceptional fade and corrosion resistance. The model is one of the last 911s to feature the state-of-the-art Tiptronic paddle shift before it was replaced by the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or ‘PDK’ dual clutch transmission in 2008/9. With heated seats and climate control alongside its performance and handling characteristics, the 997 is incredibly comfortable and a great daily driver.
