Night Blue on the outside. Carrara Grey on the inside. And not just the seats, but virtually the entire interior. In 1992, that was certainly not an inexpensive choice. Yet it is precisely what makes this Porsche look as though it has just driven straight out of a 1992 brochure.
The Porsche 964 was introduced at the end of the 1980s as the successor to the Carrera 3.2. From a distance, it was still unmistakably a 911. The round headlights, the sloping roofline, and, of course, the six-cylinder engine at the rear were all still present. Beneath that familiar shape, however, almost everything had changed.
At the time, Porsche described the car as a 911 that was approximately 85 percent new. The bumpers were integrated far more neatly into the body, traditional torsion bars gave way to coil springs, and for the first time a production 911 came standard with features such as power steering and ABS. And then came the Carrera 4.
The first 964 Porsche introduced was immediately equipped with all-wheel drive. The system drew on experience gained with the Porsche 959 and distributed power to all four wheels. It did not suddenly make the 911 tame. More than anything, it made the car impressively effective.
Where earlier 911s on a wet road could demand a driver with concentration, experience, and preferably a healthy respect for the laws of physics, the Carrera 4 inspired considerably more confidence. You can still feel that the engine is mounted at the rear, and you can still hear exactly what kind of car you are driving.
Beneath the rear decklid sits the 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six, producing approximately 250 horsepower and paired with a manual transmission. And that manual gearbox remains such a pleasure to use. Not because an automatic transmission is inherently wrong—quite the opposite, in fact—but because there is something truly special about the mechanical feel of a classic Porsche. The clutch, the movement of the gear lever, and the moment the flat-six begins pulling hard again after every shift.
This 1992 example has had only two owners. After its first German owner, the Porsche came to the Netherlands, where it then remained with the same owner for no less than 32 years. That is not a brief love affair. That is a long-term relationship.
Throughout its life, the Porsche was maintained by Porsche dealers and specialists. The complete service history is present, together with the corresponding books and invoices. As a result, the documentation is not simply a collection of loose papers, but a clear record of how this Carrera 4 was cared for over the years.
The Porsche is presented in neat, well-maintained condition. Everything feels properly cared for and correct, exactly as you would hope a 964 should feel. And then, of course, there is that interior.
Full Carrara Grey leather was a particularly bold choice at the time. Not a simple black interior that goes with everything, but a light and distinctive color that gives the cabin a character all its own. Combined with Night Blue, it works beautifully. Dark and understated on the outside. Light and expressive on the inside.
A 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 with a manual transmission, fully documented and cherished for 32 years by the same Dutch owner. All-wheel drive for confidence. An air-cooled flat-six for character. And a color combination that proves thinking beyond the obvious can sometimes work exceptionally well.
