Chassis Number – 126991Exterior Color – RedInterior Color – BlackEngine Type – 1.6 Liter Flat-FourGearbox – 4-Speed Manual TransaxleCurrent Mileage – 39,402 (TMU) Marque and Model HistoryThe legendary Porsche 356 remains today one of the icons of sports car design. With its unique profile and race-inspired lineage, the 356 became the first Porsche to proudly bear the family name of Ferdinand Porsche. Introduced in 1948, the 356 continually evolved with design and mechanical refinements until 1965, when production yielded to the 911. Culminating those years of development, the most impressive advancements came with the 356 C. Offered with standard Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes, higher lift camshaft in the 1600 C engine, and deeper bucket seats, the most advanced 356 set a new standard for the model line. History of this CarAccording to written history included with this car recounted by the original owner, this car was ordered through Georg Rittersbacher GMBH in Kaiserslautern, Germany in May 1963, by a 23-year-old US military Staff Sergeant stationed in Germany. On October 2, 1963, the owner took the train to the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen where he enjoyed a tour of the factory and took delivery of this car. As indicated on a copy of the Kardex accompanying this car, the car was delivered with engine number P730524 painted Signal Red with black leatherette interior. A copy of the original purchase order and original MSO further verifying this information is also included with the car. The owner selected the following options: an antenna, two speakers, two outside mirrors (passenger side one added at the factory on day of delivery), seatbelts for driver and passenger, Firestone Phoenix tires, chrome rims, and Coco mats. The Blaupunkt radio was purchased through the military exchange system at a 50% savings to the Sergeant and installed after delivery. The original owner retained the car in Germany until June 1964, traveling throughout Europe when the owner shipped to New York. Upon arrival July 2, 1964, he drove to his home in El Dorado, TX and then to Moses Lake, WA. The original owner retained the car until November 1965 when he sold it to the San Antonio, TX Porsche dealer, Inter-Continental Motors. The car was offered for sale on BringaTrailer in March 2022 noting that it had been under previous ownership since 2019. Services performed on the car in March 2021 include, remove engine and install new clutch and pressure plate, a new set of tires, new left axle boot, Zenith carburetors removed, rebuilt, and repaired as needed, handbrake adjusted, new air filters, fuel filter, spark plugs, points, a new fuel petcock, front transmission seal, and manifold gasket. General OverviewToday with 39,402 miles showing, this 356C Coupe presents very nicely overall with refined driver level cosmetics reflective of a quality restoration performed some years ago. The Signal Red paint is glossy throughout showing a few typical chips and minor scuff marks on the rear bumper and front facing surfaces. The trim is in very good to excellent condition overall with very nice chrome including smooth door window frames and no significant hazing on any of the plated parts. The lenses, lighting, and various trim and script are all in very good condition contributing to the overall cohesive visual presentation of this car. The panel gaps are consistent with very nice closures and tight fit including the doors which open and shut smoothly. Outfitted with chrome plated wheels and chrome plated wheel covers, the stance and driving appeal is particularly nice riding on a set of contemporary Yokohama radial tires. The black leatherette interior presents very nicely with excellent fit and finish including properly restored seats with headrests, matching black door panels, correct carpeting, and headliner. The dashboard is extremely nice, having been treated to restored instrumentation contrasted by matching red paint, taut black dash padding, and capped off with a beautifully finished steering wheel, featuring excellent aluminum spokes, and a glossy Porsche center emblem. The rear seating area is finished with matching materials including matching carpet creating a helpful storage area when the rear seats are in the down position.Under the hood, the engine bay delivers a thoughtful and generally correct presentation using Porsche parts, correct oil filter canister, correct air cleaners, and engine details. The engine has been restored using correct finishes, proper coatings, hardware, and fasteners blending traditional 356 components using a replacement block engine that has no engine number stamping. The front storage compartment stores a correct spare tire retained by a leather hold down strap. The undercarriage is representative of a well-cared for example with sound floor pans, battery box, and properly restored components including the matching transmission, numbered 72089 which is confirmed by the Kardex. The car is a delight to drive with smooth road manners, starts easily warm or cold, has progressive acceleration to highway speeds, and handling that is consistent with cars that have been sorted since restoration. Braking is very good, coming down from higher speeds with confidence and ride integrity is quite good even over bumpy road surfaces.
