The Porsche 356 was the first-ever model produced by the German manufacturer. Conceived after the Second World War by Ferry Porsche, it was based it on Volkswagen parts to reduce costs – and because that was what was available – and was styled by longtime Porsche body specialist Erwin Komenda. Porsche was then based in Gmünd in Austria, and it was here that the first series of the 356 were built, starting in 1948. In 1950 production was transferred to Stuttgart.
Retrospectively christened the ‘pre-A’, the first series proved an immediate success, not least in the United States. Built until 1955, the ‘pre-A’ was available with its flat-four engine in three sizes (1100cc, 1300cc and 1500cc) and in Coupé, Cabriolet and latterly Speedster form. This model then made way for the 356A, which was extensively modified and was available with five different engines, including three 1600cc units. In 1959 the 356A was in turn replaced by the 356B, with more power, a new gearbox, and better brakes; power output ranged from 60bhp for the 1600 right up to 140bhp for the 2000 GS-GT Carrera 2. The 356B could be distinguished from its predecessor by its higher-mounted front bumper and higher-set headlamps. In 1963 came the last of the breed, the 356C. No longer available with the Speedster style of body, it was listed until 1965, and had four-wheel disc brakes and in SC form a more powerful 95bhp engine.
Our featured car is a 1964 1600SC and would appear to have been restored ahead of being sold to its current owner at the 2009 Rétromobile show, via Belgian classic-car dealer Venderveken. It is painted in a good-looking red that is more sporting than its original colour of champagne-yellow (ref 6405), and has excellent chrome. The interior in black leather is well-finished and nicely patinated and is equipped with a Nardi wheel and Becker Europa radio with jack plug, while the Type 616/16 engine is correct for the model. The car has been regularly maintained by the Porsche centre in Levallois or at Autosiaste Garage in Courbevoie, and there are bills for more than 10,000€. Thanks to this attention, it is in excellent running order. Well balanced and with excellent brakes, this 356 has lively performance and is a pleasure to drive.
