Beschreibung

The Porsche presented here is a recently discovered ‘garage-find’ example of one of the most beloved of all 356 models: a 1957 A Sunroof Coupe.

According to the Porsche Kardex, this rare 356 was completed on June 27, 1957, finished in Fjord Green and bound for the US, where it was retailed by official US distributor Hoffman Motors in New York. While the car’s earliest history is unknown, records on file indicate that, by 1973, it was owned by Robert Dickhaus of St. Paul, Minnesota.

In June 1974, the A Coupe found an appreciative new caretaker in Ronald Bossard, a 32-year-old engineer with the 3M corporation. A self-taught mechanic with a passion for German sports cars, Mr. Bossard treasured his 356, enjoying it for many years as his “go-to” driver, and carrying out much of the car’s maintenance himself. The Porsche remained with the Bossard family when they relocated to Austin, Texas in 1986, and though it saw limited use in subsequent years, it was a fixture in the garage until Ronald’s recent passing, whereupon it was sold to the current owner.

Parked in static storage since 1987 and presented today in as-found, non-running condition, this Sunroof Coupe still retains its original numbered hood and deck lid, much of its original beige upholstery, and the proper Sigla and Sekurit glass. Like many 356s, the car’s original engine was replaced with a later unit (from a 356 B) and it is also accompanied by several charming period accessories, including a Nardi steering wheel (dated 1966) and luggage rack, as well as a proper 356 A owner’s manual, workshop manual, spare parts catalogue, and Blaupunkt radio literature. The sale also includes a selection of service records dating back to the 1970s, assorted publications on the 356 model, and various spares including the original factory-supplied steering wheel as well as bumper components and trim.

Considering its rare factory specification and charming history, with one caretaker for over 45 years, this 356 A Sunroof Coupe ought to be a perfect candidate for a complete concours-quality restoration, outlaw-style build, or mechanical re-commissioning, readying it for use in the numerous rallies and Porsche events for which it is eligible.

*Please note that this vehicle has been in long-term static storage and may not be currently operational. It will require mechanical attention prior to road use.
