When Knight Rider premiered on NBC in 1982, its true star was arguably not Michael Knight, portrayed by David Hasselhoff, but K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand): the black Pontiac Trans Am that became one of television's most recognizable vehicles. The show found a devoted audience in Europe, where Hasselhoff's debut album Night Rocker topped the Austrian charts in 1985. His success as a recording artist generated strong demand for concerts, television appearances, and public events, often accompanied by K.I.T.T.
This 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is documented as one such car, among those imported from the United States by Vienna's Peter Malek on behalf of Profile Promotions, the firm of Hasselhoff's then-manager Herbert Fechter. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by AMELI CAR AG on 29 December 1989 states that it was converted by Thomas J. Oberhaus of Hollywood Productions to original Universal Pictures plans. The certificate further states that the car accompanied Hasselhoff at television appearances, concerts, exhibitions, and promotional events across Europe. It also appeared on Swiss television on 26 November 1990, when host Beni Thurnherr drove it into the studio.
Swiss customs papers dated 31 December 1990 and a St. Gallen customs inspection report stamped 15 July 1991 further document the car's provenance and chassis number. Further records show that Malek, founder of the Siegfried Marcus Automobile Museum, was involved in the car's sale to Swiss record label Exclusa AG. During Exclusa's ownership in the 1990s, the car was stolen in Italy; it was later recovered through INTERPOL and returned. The original dashboard electronics were stolen in the process. The current owner acquired the Trans Am from Exclusa AG in October 1999 and received archival photographs capturing the car alongside Hasselhoff.
The car is recorded in the Knight Rider Historians registry maintained by Joe Huth, and noted K.I.T.T. historian AJ Palmgren inspected it in Switzerland in 2007. In his video, Palmgren described this car as a K.I.T.T. vehicle built for David Hasselhoff's Austrian Night Rocker Tour.
The conversion retains its original early-1980s dashboard shell, while the lost electronics were replaced by a Season 1/2-style suite from Alessandro Zagni's ZA Elettronica, complete with voice box and twin LOTI Display Systems monitors. The Gullwing-style steering wheel and its switch pods, overhead console, illuminated accelerator pedal, and the keypad-equipped center console with its sound effects remain from the original conversion. Outside, the car features the signature remote-controlled scanner and smoked taillights with Plexiglas blackout covers. Power comes from the factory 305-cubic-inch LU5 Cross-Fire Injection V8 delivering 165 horsepower.
The car runs and drives, but owing to its K.I.T.T. modifications it is not road legal and shows signs of use consistent with its long history of touring alongside Hasselhoff across Europe. Having once crisscrossed Europe at David Hasselhoff's side, this K.I.T.T. would make a significant centerpiece for a museum or a collection of Hollywood memorabilia.
