PANHARD CD - 1962

HISTORY
The fantastic car is a rare 1962 Panhard CD. At the 2004 edition of Le Mans Classic aboard the CD64 prototype, its owner was amazed by the quality of the chassis and the prowess of the model. "I had a glare on the performance of the car with its small engine, I needed one to run at Le Mans Classic. Indeed, the CD plays its weak power by a heavy weight!

This CD was acquired in 2005 after this victory in 2004. An intense research work was undertaken by its last owner. Having published an ad entitled "Looking for a Panhard CD", an owner came forward out of curiosity. However, he did not wish to separate from his CD, a derisory offer was sent to him so that the latter agrees to separate. The buyer then rushed the same day, a monday in Cherbourg since Deauville to sign the assignment and avoid a change of opinion of the seller. The latter was disturbed by the rapidity of events, but kept his word by simultaneously presenting the night car in the rain. "The CD was beautiful, in a medium and complete working order".

Upon acquisition, the body was completely dismantled, the chassis redone, and all the mechanics. The restoration was carried out at the famous specialist Reynald Vercoutter, mechanic of the Panhard family and rider "Panhardiste" in historic rally. The chassis has been developed as the different participations in the Le Mans Classic with precise brake and suspension settings and studied over the course of events to make this CD less under-tacky by playing on tire pressures and adjusting harder at the front, adjustable Koni dampers. "A lot of tuning since 2005. To make it on vireux, it is under vireuse at the origin. We can still accentuate, which allows to go into corner drift without touching the brakes too much. Adjustment of suspensions. The brakes are vintage ones. The upholstery is the original except for the door panels that have been made to measure.

This car has participated in 5 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Classic by winning the performance index 3 times as it already did in 1962 at the 24h du Mans on the Competition model. This last edition, she finished first !

This model still beats records at the Le Mans Classic performance index as did the CD Competition models! The Panhard CD was designed at a time when racing cars had to be as beautiful as they were fast.

ORGANS

Body
Thanks to a body entirely made of fiber as well as a very developed aerodynamics, this car shows exceptional performances, thanks to its very light weight. The Zagato-style roof boss, the slender stern, the front face cut to swallow the Hunaudières straight line and a narrower rear track, presentation of an exceptional car ...

Chassis and running gear
The Panhard CD has a Panhard PL17 chassis. The drum brakes of the CD are characterized by extended fins, which facilitates the cooling of Al Fin brand brakes. Like the Alpine A108 and A110, the Panhard CD has a steel frame welded to a central beam. At the front, it ends with a set of four tubes on which are fixed gear, as well as the direction and suspensions, all from the PL-17 sedan. A transverse beam forms the rear part which is connected to the central beam. The torsion bars and the arms are fixed on this rear transverse beam. With its rear lanes narrower than the front, it is the finesse of penetration into the air was preferred. The entire car then weighed less than 600 kilos, proof of the success of the concept of Charles Deutsch. Placed on the ground, the CD had a ground clearance of only 13 cm. The rack-and-pinion steering was known to the sedans, while the ETA drum brakes were unpublished. Contrary to what one might think of a sports car of this caliber, the driving wheels are the wheels ... before! The wheels are lined with Dunlop XAS FF 145 x 380 tires. The racing experience is still used in the series. Thus, it is thanks to the Panhard CD du Mans that the Panhard range will benefit from the new ETA drum brakes (Accelerated Thermal Evacuation). They are easily recognized by the external form. The drums are made of aluminum and are lined internally in cast iron.

Optical
The Cibié headlamps are also special designed specifically for this model. The reliability of the 848cc engine is a great asset to race in endurance events such as the 24H at Le Mans Classic.

Engine
Coach CD Panhard took over the Tiger engine from the PL-17 sedan. With 848 cm3, it was distinguished by its architecture: two flat cylinders cooled by air (with turbine Aérodyne double effect) as on a Citroën 2 CV. Powered by a Zenith 38 double-body carburetor, it developed 60hp SAE at 5,750 rpm (about 50hp DIN). A power certainly modest, but already very tidy for a sportswoman of only 580 kilos! The motorized sedan of the same mechanics, or even the 24 CT coupe weighed nearly 250 kilos more.

Gearbox
A four-speed mechanical gearbox with synchronized first was standard. The performance announced by the documentations of time indicated 160 km / h in maximum speed.
