The Olympia Rekord was the first Opel to be designed with a ponton shaped coachwork with styling elements clearly having their roots in the USA. This was combined with a partially synchronised gearbox and an improved chassis. Numerous parts inside and outside were chrome-plated providing the car with a rather luxurious appearance. In line with GM policy, annual face lifts were implemented which of course had a detrimental effect on the resale values of older models. The production of the Olympia began in April 1953 with a 2-door saloon which, thanks to a very reasonable price, resulted in 1’500 orders immediately. Our early Olympia with its chassis number 34393 was delivered through GM Bienne, resulting in its designation in the cars registration in French “Record” with a C. The history of the little Opel is not known, until in January 2009, it was first registered as a veteran car. The car must have been in a very original condition then with the floor showing no welding repairs and even the paint could well be the original one just like the interior. In June of that year, the Olympia was taken over by an enthusiast from the Basel region who, over the next 14 years, only covered around 9’000 kilometres but had the car regularly maintained. To operate the Becker Grand Prix radio a 6/12 Volt converter was installed. In February 2024 the limousine bought by the last owner for sentimental reasons. He now has realised though that the pretty Opel does not match up to his nostalgic memories and now has decided to pass it on to a new owner. The Olympia record is in good well-maintained condition and the 34’400 kilometres on the odometer most probably correspond with a mileage of 134’400 kilometres. The most recent veteran MOT was completed in December 2023.
