In 1970, three models were available under the Cutlass Supreme name, including a convertible. Also available, exclusively to this series, was the new SX package. Oldsmobile had the debut of its Cutlass Supreme intermediate model for the 1970 model year and it received a warm reception. For buyers who wanted to spice their cars up, the company offered an SX package that included 455-cid V-8 engine options, special badging, TH400 automatic transmission and a few other special features. It all added up to a refined musclecar that was meant to be classy and more understated than many of the wilder alternatives that were available at the time.

Olds offered as large span of performance cars, covering the Cutlass, 4-4-2, 88 and Toronado, most having a "W" series performance engine. For 1970, Olds had the W31 Cutlass and W45 Rallye 350, the W30 and 4-4-2, the W32 SX, the W33 Delta, and the W34 Toronado GT in their "performance car" arena. In this impressive mix of autos was the nearly hidden Cutlass Supreme SX, which denotes a Cutlass Supreme Coupe or Convertible with option Y79.

The SX started the 1970 year as the newest version of the '67 Turnpike Cruiser and the "economy" 4-4-2 of 1968-69. This new option gave one the L33 Rocket 455-cid big-block V-8 with dual exhausts for torque, a two-barrel carburetor and highway gears for economy, and an automatic transmission for smoothness- crammed in the new for 1970 Cutlass Supreme.

You could check off a few options like a console (the Supreme had buckets standard), sport wheel, Rocket Rally Pac, and the famed FE2 4-4-2 Rally Sports Suspension. The car would not have been very remarkable if the offerings stopped there. During the course of the year, Oldsmobile bulletins were received from Lansing on a regular basis changing what was available on an SX.

Finished in Fire Red with a white bucket seat interior and a white soft-top; this Cutlass SX has been restored and runs with a 455-cid V-8 with automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, optional Rocket Rally Pac, Super Stock factory wheels and is fitted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. According to normally reliable sources; production for SX models in 1970 totaled 7,197 split between 6,404 hardtops and 793 convertibles. The SX package returned for one more year, but it was only available with the mild 455-4, now with low compression. This is a very uncommon, in many ways forgotten part of the esteemed Oldsmobile musclecar assemblage and should provide driving enjoyment and interesting conversation.
