Rare model, 1,808 units produced
The first Morgan with four wheels was launched in 1936. Since then, the overall design has remained unchanged. This is a unique case in automotive history; no one else has achieved such longevity. Historically, the first four-wheeled Morgan was called the 4/4, referring to four wheels and a four-cylinder engine. The name changed to Plus 4 with the installation of a 2,088 cc overhead valve engine in 1950. In 1950, Morgan introduced the "Plus 4" Drop Head Coupe or Cabriolet, featuring a very luxurious body that provided effective protection against the elements.
Morgan had previously offered this body style in 1938 but abandoned it to focus on producing tourers and roadsters. The "Drop Head Coupe" is a very rare variant among the Plus 4 models produced between 1950 and 1968, with only 433 units produced during that period. Due to the more complex manufacturing process, the selling price was significantly higher, and commercial success was not truly realized. Today, it is an extremely rare Morgan.
With taller doors and a seamless line from the hood to the rear, this version appears very elegant once the top is up, more "evening wear" than the roadsters. The additional protection is both real and effective. The side windows remain removable like those on the roadster.
The windshield is quite different, and the finish is significantly superior, featuring wood accents on the doors and side moldings. For a Morgan, this is a high-end body! Morgans fitted with a Triumph TR3 engine have serial numbers ranging from 3,421 to 5,574. Only 1,808 units equipped with this engine were produced between February 1956 and February 1964. Among these, there were only about a hundred cabriolets.
