The MG J2 set the trend for British sports cars during the 1930s. Introduced in 1932, many sports cars of the thirties copied the J2 body style with its cut away doors, cycle type mudguards, fold flat windscreen and slab gas tank with spare wheel on the back. It remained the bedrock of MG styling until 1955, when the TF was replaced by the more aerodynamic MGA.
The J-Series was available either as a J1, an open four-seater or closed coupe, or as a J2, a small two-seater open sports car. The significant change made to the J2 during its production was the switch to swept wings and running boards in 1933. The J2 has a four-cylinder, single overhead cam engine with a cross flow head and dual SU downdraft carburettors. Its 847cc engine produced 36 bhp and was rated as an 80mph car by Autocar magazine in 1932.
