Bought new by McLaren Motor Racing Ltd,
The original green log book of this 1965 MGB Roadster shows the first owner to be Bruce McLaren Racing. The registered address was updated in October 1967 to the newly opened McLaren factory in Colnbrook, still in the name of Bruce McLaren Racing and validated with Teddy Mayer’s signature. It was regularly driven by Bruce McLaren himself and Teddy Mayer documented stories of him showing his employees the basics of quick driving in this MG. It was sold to a Mr McDowell on 6th March 1969 and remained on the road until 1976. It was then stored and has been off the road until this year.
It was taken in hand in 2021 and sympathetically restored using as many original parts as possible. The Heritage Certificate shows that the car was supplied in Chelsea Grey with an ox-blood interior and it has been newly resprayed in that rare and attractive scheme, with a hard top to match. The bodywork is solid and rust free; the underside is newly Gravitex sealed. The original ox-blood leather seats have been carefully restored and the interior trimmed where necessary to match. The engine was fully rebuilt and runs sweetly. The original registration, JPG290C, had lapsed from the DVLA data-base but has been reallocated.
This car is of genuine historic interest; the restoration work has been completed to a high standard. It is now ready to be used on the road and it would grace any collection. Alternatively, it could, of course, form the basis for a classic race car whose provenance would surely guarantee its entry to any event.
