At the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show hopes were high with MG and with the top brass of the British Motor Corporation as they milled around the new MGA. For some time, indeed, the marque had been faced with fierce competition in the mid-size sports-car sector. There was a need to offer something new, in order to win over a young and wealthy clientele, whilst ensuring a degree of continuity with the preceding TC, TD and TF.
Happily the company rose to the challenge with brio, with a svelte new model created by chief engineer Sydney Enever. Aesthetically and mechanically the MGA offered all the sporting characteristics expected of such a car. At first of 1489cc, the four-cylinder engine was progressively increased to 1622cc in capacity, whilst two body styles were available, a roadster and a coupé. There was also a short-lived Twin Cam model, produced with an eye to competition, but which was not a success. In all, more than 100,000 MGAs were made, before the model was replaced by the no less legendary MGB. But it was the ‘A’ that propelled the Abingdon-based company to leadership of the global sports-car market.
First registered in December 1958, and equipped with wire wheels, the car presented here has the specification of the MGA 1600 introduced in July 1959. It thus has a 1588cc engine and front disc brakes. Fully restored between 2014 and 2019 at a cost of more than 21,000€, it has completely rebuilt mechanicals, a repainted body, and as-new black upholstery. All the work is itemised on bills from Service Auto Villeneuve in Seine et Marne.
Wanting to acquire his first classic car, the current owner bought the MG in the summer of 2016. Unused to older vehicles, he only rarely used the car and has today decided to sell in order to buy something more recent. Being a meticulous person and wanting to be sure of selling the car, in January 2019 he had it given a full mechanical overhaul at J.P. Auto Passion in Clamart, at an invoiced cost of over 10,000€. With more than 30,000€ invested in the car between 2014 and 2019, this is an MGA in excellent order and ready for enjoyment in the summer months ahead.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Paris, at the Espace Champerret, France, on June the 23th, 2019.
