Beschreibung

GENERAL
The car presented here is a 1970 Mercedes 280se 3.5 Flachkühler coupe, delivered new in Long Beach, California.

The previous owner has been in possession of the car since 2001.

This is the most desirable specification of W111 Coupe’s in the range, and the 3.5 litre V8 delivers both speed, power and comfort, all in a gorgeous package.

These cars were well ahead of their time and a good example like this delivers the driving comfort one would expect from a modern car.
EXTERIOR

This Benz has been repainted in 2018 in model- and period-correct Mercedes bronze metallic. Originally, this car left the factory in non-metallic beige, which we think isn’t nearly as attractive as its current colour scheme.

No signs of previous welding can be found anywhere on the car. The original spot welds are visible almost throughout, implying that this car has always been kept in good condition.

The new thin bare metal paintwork is of a very high quality level and still reflects like mirror. We believe that little to no filler has been used during the repaint.

The chrome and brightwork is all original and still presents very nicely. Although not as immaculate as the paintwork, it looks very lovely indeed.
INTERIOR

When opening the driver’s door, you are instantly greeted by the smell of the original black leather. The large electric sunroof works perfectly and the electric windows make a perfect breeze for hair-through-the-wind-cruising in this pillarless coupe.

The lovely black leather interior is still 90% original. An upholstery expert carried out a few specialized small repairs to the original Mercedes leather, making it look absolutely wonderful while retaining all its originality.

The wooden trim looks good and doesn’t require any attention. The odometer is displaying 91.700 miles. It is equipped with a classic look modern radio with DAB, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

These cars have large cabins with a lot of leg room and sumptuous seats. They’re ideal for long distance traveling with two, three or even four people with luggage. This is a true “gentleman’s express”.

Very rare and sought after, this example comes equipped with a floor-mounted automatic shifter.

The large electric sunroof is working as it should, and can turn the cabin into a light and airy place to enjoy your drives. The headliner looks original and is in remarkably good condition for its age.

ENGINE

The top-of-the-range 3.5 litre V8 is mated to an automatic transmission.

The engine is running very nicely and feels healthy. The last service was carried out in July 2018, after which the car was barely driven.

All the electrical components and ancillaries are working as they should. The brakes are also fully operational.

These cars were well ahead of their time and a good example like this delivers the driving comfort one would expect from a modern car.
BODY

The undercarriage of the car is dry and appears to be very sound. The suspension components are looking well maintained.
PAPER TRAIL

The original build data card is available, as are some of the original booklets. The car comes a US title and EU import documents. All import taxes have been paid, so it will be ready to register anywhere in the EU.
