There are cars that impress with numbers. And there are cars that evoke an atmosphere even before the engine is started. The Mercedes-Benz SL 350 (R231) undoubtedly belongs to that second category.

On a crisp morning, somewhere along an empty provincial road in the municipality Rijssen, it stands low and wide in the light. The long hood seems endless, the grille stands upright with that large Mercedes emblem confidently in the center, and the muscular rear end reveals that this SL was not built merely to be seen — but above all to effortlessly devour thousands of kilometers. In 2012, this was the new interpretation of an icon: less boulevard cruiser, more high-tech grand touring.

The R231 generation marked a major step forward for Mercedes-Benz. For the first time, the SL featured a largely aluminium body, making it significantly lighter than its predecessor. You feel that immediately. Where older SLs sometimes gave a somewhat sluggish impression, this generation drives surprisingly nimbly. Not nervous or sharp like a pure sports car, but with a natural elegance. As if the car knows exactly how fast you want to drive without you having to explain it. Under the long nose of the SL350 lies the modern 3,5-liter V6 from the M276 family. No roaring V8, no theatrical AMG machine — and perhaps that is precisely its charm. The engine delivers well over 300 hp, but more importantly: it does everything with calm and refinement. Almost whisper-quiet at idle, warm and silky during acceleration. The 7-speed automatic shifts smoothly and relaxed, as if haste is actually beneath its dignity.

With the roof closed, the SL drives like a luxury coupé. Quiet, solid, and impressively comfortable. However, open the metal convertible roof, and the car changes character completely. Especially on a lovely evening, with the Airscarf blowing warm air past your neck and the last rays of the sun falling on the dashboard, you suddenly understand why the SL has held a special place within Mercedes since the 1950s. This is not a car for drag races at traffic lights or track days. This is a car for departures without a destination. The interior exudes true Mercedes luxury: solid metal switches, thick leather, wide seats, and a dashboard that is more reminiscent of a luxury lounge than a cockpit. Everything feels sturdy and durable. Perhaps it lacks the minimalist sleekness of modern Mercedes models, but precisely because of this, the R231 has acquired a timeless quality today. It hails from a period when Mercedes still emphatically built on comfort, solidity, and mechanical refinement.

Naturally, a certain complexity is inherent to such a car. An SL is no simple roadster. The electric steel roof, extensive electronics, and optional systems like Active Body Control make it technically impressive, but they also require attention as the years go by. However, a well-maintained example still feels surprisingly modern. In fact, many current convertibles do not achieve the same level of composure and solidity. And that is perhaps the most special thing about the SL350 R231. It never tries to be overly sporty or aggressive. It has nothing to prove. Where many modern cars scream loudly for attention, this Mercedes exudes above all self-confidence. It drives like a well-tailored suit looks: stylish, relaxed, and effortless.

This 2013 model year SL350 in Obsidian Black metallic may not be the most extreme SL ever built, but it is possibly one of the most balanced. Fast enough to impress, comfortable enough to drive across Europe, and discreetly chic in a way that has become rare today. It is a car for enthusiasts who don't necessarily want to be the fastest — but do want to take the most beautiful journey.

Our SL was imported into the Netherlands from Germany as a so-called 'Vorfürwagen' exactly one year after delivery on November 29, 2012, and has been perfectly maintained since then by the three Dutch owners and, of course, by the Mercedes-Benz dealers listed below.
