By the mid-1980’s, it was becoming clear that the beloved R107 series was in need of a replacement. The 1970’s steel-and-chrome styling was replaced with an innovative, angular design featuring multiple suspension, steering and drivetrain improvements, along a myriad of creature comforts. The result was the R129 series, the most advanced and luxurious SL to date. Its timeless styling, capable performance and superior engineering made it an icon of the 1990’s and a universal symbol of success.

The Mercedes SL600 is vastly different than its I6 and V8 brethren. Its two main highlights are its state-of-the-art M120 V12 engine, shared with the Pagani Zonda, and a sophisticated hydro-pneumatic suspension suited for long distance, high-speed cruising —similar to the one in the 450SEL 6.9.

This particular car was ordered new at Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan with no option left unticked: heated contour seats, full-glass panoramic roof, or special alloy wheels are all part of this ‘Gordon Gekko spec’ SL600. As of August 2021, it benefited of a complete, open-chequebook recommissioning with the intention to put into daily use.
