Some Mercedes-Benz models are specified so unusually well that even we, after decades around classic cars and youngtimers, have to look twice. This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 Special Edition is a perfect example. A deep black body in Obsidian Black, combined with a truly stunning interior in soft Designo leather, finished in red and black. Among connoisseurs, this special version is known as “Rotkäppchen,” or Little Red Riding Hood. A charming nickname, but make no mistake: beneath that elegant hood lies a wolf. And quite a wolf at that.

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced its new generation of SL, internally known as the R129. It succeeded the legendary R107 and was designed under the direction of Bruno Sacco. The result was one of the most timeless roadsters Mercedes-Benz has ever built. Clean lines, a low windshield, an imposing hood, and a design that still looks remarkably modern today.

But the R129 was much more than a handsome design. Mercedes-Benz used the model as a technological showcase. Think of the automatically deploying roll bar, the electrohydraulically operated convertible top, and the seat belts integrated directly into the seats. Exceptionally advanced features for a car introduced at the end of the 1980s.

In 1998, Mercedes-Benz decided to launch an exclusive Special Edition. Only 500 examples of this edition were produced, spread across several SL engine variants. The combination of Obsidian Black with red Designo leather and black contrasting details gave the car a character all its own. Even within the already exceptionally luxurious R129 range, Mercedes-Benz managed to create something truly special. And frankly, we think the color combination is fantastic.

The black exterior looks understated, powerful, and exceptionally stylish. But the moment you open the door, the atmosphere changes completely. The supple red leather, black accents, and high-quality finish come together to create an interior you will not soon forget. The special upholstery and unique Special Edition details show just how much attention Mercedes-Benz devoted to a limited-production model at the time.

Under the long hood lies the naturally aspirated five-liter V8. An engine that suits the character of the SL exceptionally well. Smooth, powerful, and with a wonderful reserve of performance. The automatic transmission makes relaxed cruising effortless, while a firmer press of the accelerator immediately reveals that this roadster also has a distinctly sporting side.

The R129 also features a particularly sophisticated chassis. Thanks to its independent suspension and advanced multilink rear axle, the SL combines excellent road manners with the level of comfort you expect from a high-quality Mercedes-Benz. A wonderful car for long journeys, but just as appealing for a relaxed drive on a sunny Sunday.

This example was delivered new in Zurich, Switzerland. The SL has been exceptionally well maintained and is accompanied by extensive documentation. The careful service history shows that this Mercedes has received exactly the attention it deserves throughout its life.

The condition is particularly impressive. The paintwork, body details, trim, and overall interior present at a level that makes the car feel far younger than it really is. The soft leather has been beautifully cared for, and the entire car has that special freshness you hope to find in a well-preserved Mercedes-Benz.

Once again, it is a wonderful example of what is possible when Mercedes-Benz build quality is combined with an owner who treats a car with care. Some cars simply grow older with time. Others are carefully preserved, allowing their original quality to remain clearly visible even decades later.

A 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 Special Edition, one of only 500 examples built in this exclusive series. Finished in Obsidian Black with stunning red-and-black Designo leather, exceptionally well equipped, and delivered new in Zurich. With extensive documentation, careful maintenance, and a condition that feels remarkably close to that of a lightly used younger car.

An exceptionally stylish Mercedes-Benz with a charming nickname and a fantastic V8. Little Red Riding Hood has never looked this appealing.
