Debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, the W113 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL replaced the 300 SL and 190 SL at once. An undisputed design and engineering triumph, the new and sporty yet entirely rational Mercedes-Benz progressed through the 250 SL, which introduced four-wheel disc brakes, to the 2.8-liter 280 SL built from November 1967 to February 1971. Delivering more power, torque, and flexibility than its predecessors, the 280 SL remains the most popular and enjoyable variant of the SL series.

One of just 830 built, this final-year 280 SL benefits from a bare-metal professional restoration by marque expert Tony LaBella with exceptional fit and finish. Painted in traditional silver gray with a matching removable hardtop (including stand), and gray convertible top, this SL is complemented by exceptionally well-fitted red leather upholstery, red square-weave carpeting, and excellent wood trim. Desirable amenities include air-conditioning, a Becker Europa radio, and rear-window defroster. The engine and its compartment are correctly equipped and finished, and the trunk is correctly fitted with a covered spare tire and tools, plus a period Hartmann suitcase, indoor and outdoor car covers, and desirable additional accessories. Irreplaceable integrity is demonstrated by this SL’s matching-numbers engine, transmission, and paint color, plus its date-coded wheels, number stampings, and factory spot welds. Rare and striking throughout, this final-year Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is an unqualified design icon, ready for a multitude of desirable shows and classic tours.
