Beschreibung

Back in 1963, the all-new Mercedes-Benz 230SL represented a huge improvement over the outgoing 190SL roadster. Its 150 hp, six-cylinder engine replaced the 190’s four-cylinder, and it was gradually increased in size to the most desirable 180 hp, 2.8-liter engine in late 1967. The bulbous bodywork of the 190 was replaced by Paul Bracq’s crisp, angular design, with its unusual concave hardtop roof that led to the famous “Pagoda” sobriquet. After the W113’s demise in 1971, the new R107 generation of Mercedes SL would be produced for the next 20 years.

This genuine European-specification 280SL was delivered new in Belgium, and is presented in a refreshing shade of Light Ivory (670H) with a Black (040) hardtop and hubcaps. At some point in its European stage of ownership, it received a new crate engine from Mercedes-Benz, rather than a rebuild. The car was acquired in Germany by the previous owner, who shipped it to Dubai in the late 2010’s, and treated it the vehicle a complete body restoration, as well as extensive mechanical work to drive daily.

Under our ownership, we have performed a few key cosmetic works to make it closer to the original Paul Bracq design: refurbishment of the dashboard leather and wood, restoration of the hardtop and headliner, replating of multiple chromed and gold cadmium surfaces, full refurbishment of the front subframe, reseal of the rear end, a full rebuild on the original Becker radio by Becker Autosound, and a final tidying up of the engine bay and interior, installing correct German loop carpeting. Mechanically, we have upgraded the ignition system with 1-2-3 Ignition and an alloy radiator 20% more efficient than the original.

As it is now, it is an excellent performer and it is ready to drive an enjoy by its next owner, hopefully continuing the tradition of care that it has enjoyed in the last few years.
