Launched at Geneva in 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W113) replaced both the 300 SL and 190 SL in one stroke and ushered in a new singleplatform sports car policy for its maker. The crisp body lines penned by Paul Bracq coupled with the iconic “Pagoda” hardtop made the SL an instant classic. Development culminated with the 2.8-liter 280 SL, which was built from December 1967 to February 1971; its refinements and enhanced torque captivated road testers and eager customers in period. Only 283 of these cars were equipped with the highly coveted ZF five-speed gearbox, including this stellar example from 1969.

Sold new in Canada and subsequently exported to the US, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is a documented “Code 230” five-speed example from new, confirmed by Mercedes-Benz Classic and a copy of its corresponding factory data card. A comprehensive and highly detailed professional restoration was completed during 2017 by Aventura Auto Service in New York at a cost of more than $143,000, documented by detailed invoices on file. Refinished in its original Metallic Silver (DB 180) using a BASF Glasurit two-stage system, this exceedingly rare 280 SL features an all-new black interior, fully restored mechanicals and underpinnings, a restored hardtop, and much more. Spectacular in its presentation, it includes books, tools, restoration records, and photographs. Its rarity of specification earns it a place alongside the greatest models bearing the three-pointed star.
