2.8-liter inline six engine with 168 horsepower, 4-speed automatic transmission

Introduced in December of 1967, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL "Pagoda" became synonomous with quality, comfort and luxury. The convertible sported an updated 2.8-liter engine producing 168 horsepower and 180lb/ft of torque, this was a welcomed upgrade that gave the car a much-needed performance boost. The 280SL was produced for 4 years from 1967 to 1971, succeeded by the heavier R107 350SL, making 280SLs a sought-after model for their lightweight yet comfortable design.

This early production 280SL was optioned in the gorgeous Dark Maroon paint finish over a Parchment leather interior. The car during its life was well cared for, evident by its current condition. Between 2008 and 2012, its noted that the 280SL received an extensive amount of work that more than likely brought it close to the condition that it is in today. Still a very original car, parts of this 280SL were restored as needed which included its wood and aluminum trim, chrome, its Dark Maroon paint, along with a host of mechanical items replaced in 2012.

In 2013 the car was purchased by the most recent owner who purchased the car from a noted marque expert. A Mercedes collector herself, she kept this car as part of her collection for almost 6 years. During that time, she performed a host of maintenance items herself along with her trusted workshops doing some work for her. Most recently in August of 2015 the 280SL was treated to a $3,549 servicing. This included a complete oil service, replacement of the front brake calipers and rotors, a brake fluid flush, along with a few other various items. She drove the car less than 4,900 during her ownership before deciding to part ways to make room in her collection, upon which the 280SL arrived at Canepa in 2019.

Upon arrival, the car was immediately given a comprehensive mechanical inspection from front to back. Once completed, the car was rolled into Canepa's award-winning detail department where the car was meticulously cleaned. With its underside completely spotless, its Dark Maroon exterior was given a full foam-pad polish that now adds another level of depth to the Mercedes-Benz color. The interior, engine bay and trunk were given the same attention to detail, with no surface left untouched to leave the car in immaculate condition.

Now this Mercedes-Benz 280SL is ready for its next owner, with its excellent restored mechanical and cosmetic condition that is ready to perform and look like a concours-winner, all while being enjoyed doing what it does best: grand touring.
