Beschreibung

"Mercedes-Benz sports cars have gone through more continuous development than any other mode of automotive sporting transport. From the very early versions of the 170V back in the 1930s right through to the modern SL AMGs of today, their combination of build quality, refinement and elegance have set them apart from the crowd. In the 1960s, the SL (or Sport Leicht) options came in three engine sizes, 2.3, 2.5 and the larger and faster 2.8 litre Pagoda option. Obviously, the cream of the crop, the 280 SL became the one the aspirational model with its five bearing crankshaft and classic lines are considered by most as the model to own.
One of the most respected specialists in this field is Colin Ferns of Richmond, London. It was under his exacting eye that this Pagoda was restored in recent years. Once the engine and interior were taken out, the body and engine bay underwent a complete repaint in the original Mercedes-Benz 57 colour. At this time the US specification side repeaters were removed and the correct European headlamps installed. Whilst on the bench, the engine was stripped down and refreshed with full cylinder head overhaul, new camshaft, camshaft bearings and new timing gears and chain. The fuel injection pump was also overhauled with all new oil seals and gaskets, a high-power starter motor and a new and correct Mercedes-Benz original welded exhaust system from front to back was also fitted, the only way to ensure that the Pagoda’s wonderful exhaust note is not lost as it often is when fitting stainless-steel systems. All suspension and sub-frame rubbers were renewed as well as four new tyres and gear selector bushes. The automatic transmission was also overhauled with new fuel injectors, new fuel delivery pump and a new power steering box. Inside the cockpit, both seats were rebuilt with new springs and padding. Once these extensive works were undertaken, the engine and engine bay were detailed to an ‘as-new’ standard. You really would be hard pushed to find a better example at this time. This fine example will be delivered to the sale with a fresh MoT test certificate and light service courtesy of Colin Ferns, of course."
