Beschreibung

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production until February 1971. An all new design by Paul Bracq to replace the 190 SL and 300 SL Roaster. The 280 SL had a powerful 2.8 litre version of Mercedes inline-six and used Bosch fuel injection. To save on weight, the bonnet, boot lid and tonneau cover were all composed of aluminium. The nickname 'Pagoda' was quickly adopted thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a pagoda roof. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful disc brakes and radial tyres gave the W113 superb handling for its time. These roadsters also have one of the most beautiful bodies produced in the 1960s. Thanks to their robust inline-six and their luxurious Mercedes interior, they are wonderful cars to be driven and enjoyed. The styling of the front paid homage to the legendary 300 SL with its characteristic upright Bosch 'fishbowl' headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel.

This example is presented in the very rarely seen and gorgeous shade of Olive Green, with a cream leather interior. Originally supplied to the USA, our vendor purchased the car in Italy around six years ago after a long search for the right example, having wanted a Pagoda for as long as he could remember. Little is known about the early history of the car, though it's evident it has been restored at some point, quite possibly in Italy. This Pagoda is presented particularly well throughout, the brightwork gleams and the interior shows very few signs of wear. The Olive Green paintwork has a good shine with just a few blemishes in places and some minor micro-blistering on the bonnet, but nothing which would require immediate attention, it would look right at home in frankly any environment. During its time in Italy, the car was subjected to the rigorous ASI examination, which determines the quality of restorations and authenticity of classic cars. Photocopies of all pages of the examination are provided with the car. Supplied to auction with a fresh MoT test certificate valid until June 2026 and is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian, this Pagoda is certainly worthy of further inspection, it is a very well-presented example and we think represents excellent value.
