Form & Freiheit - die Pagode von 1965
Mit gerade einmal 24 Jahren wird der Franzose Paul Bracq 1957 Teil der Designabteilung bei Mercedes-Benz, wo er eine Linie reduzierter, moderner Eleganz definiert. Mitte der 1960er-Jahre überträgt Bracq diese Handschrift auf ein neues Hardtop-Coupé, den 230 SL. Die wohlproportionierte Form mit ihrem markanten Pagodendach wirkt «ätherisch, leise – und doch sportlich», wie der bekannte italienische Automobilhistoriker Paolo Tumminelli in seiner Geschichte des europäischen Automobildesigns schreibt. Dabei bietet die Pagode nicht nur eindeutig mehr Nutzraum als ihr rundlicheres Vorgängermodell, der 190 SL. Dank des Hardtops erhält der Besitzer oder die Besitzerin die zwei aufregendsten automobilen Formen in einem: ein Coupé und ein Cabrio.
Die hier angebotene Pagode ist ein recht frühes Exemplar, das im April 1965 das erste Mal in Verkehr kommt. Es wird mit dem optionalen Viergang-Automaten bestellt.
Seit über 45 Jahren ist das Fahrzeug nun im gleichen Familienbesitz. Vor acht Jahren fliessen bei einer Mercedes-Zweigniederlassung über 40'000 Franken in das Fahrzeug. Unter anderem in umfangreiche Arbeiten an den Achsen, dem Kühlsystem, der Zündung und den Bremsen. Er besitzt immer noch das erste original Lederinterieur. Erst vor zwei Jahren erhält die Pagode die letzte Veteranen-MFK und präsentiert sich heute in einem guten Gesamtzustand.
Shape & Freedom – the 1965 Pagoda
At just 24 years of age, the Frenchman Paul Bracq joined the Mercedes-Benz design department in 1957, where he defined a line of refined, modern elegance. In the mid-1960s, Bracq applied this signature style to a new hardtop coupé, the 230 SL. With its well-balanced proportions and distinctive pagoda roof, the design appears “ethereal, understated – yet sporty”, as renowned Italian automotive historian Paolo Tumminelli writes in his history of European car design. The Pagoda also offers noticeably more usable space than its rounder predecessor, the 190 SL. And thanks to its hardtop, the owner enjoys the two most exciting automotive forms in one: a coupé and a convertible.
The Pagoda offered here is a relatively early example, first registered in April 1965. It was ordered with the optional four-speed automatic gearbox.
The car has remained in the same family for over 45 years. Eight years ago, more than 40,000 Swiss francs were invested in the vehicle at an official Mercedes-Benz branch, including extensive work on the axles, cooling system, ignition and brakes. It still retains its original leather interior. Only two years ago, the Pagoda passed its most recent veteran MOT inspection and today presents itself in good overall condition.
