The 1954 New York International Auto Show saw the debut of the 190 SL alongside the highly anticipated road-going version of the 300 SL Gullwing. A new 1.9-liter, inline-four, SOHC engine, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, powered the more affordable convertible. Its long hood, short rear deck, bumpers, grille, and curvaceous profile gave a nod to the 300 SL, but retained a character unique to itself. A hit among buyers, 25,881 examples of the 190 SL were built, with most destined for the US market.

Built during the model’s final production year, this exceptional 190 SL is finished in its original Weiss (White, DB 050) with a red leather interior and accented by a rare removable hardtop. Its exemplary restoration in 2016 by Palm Beach Classics is a testament to the importance of the model. The work included a bare-metal respray and rebuild of the original engine, while the Solex carburetors were reconditioned by the marque experts at Kienle Automobiltechnik in Germany. In 2018, it deservedly received the Best of Show award at the Art Basel Promenade show in Miami Beach, which was awarded by Paolo Pininfarina. Purchased by the consignor in 2022, this exemplary 190 SL presents well, with its systems and finishes still in impressive condition. The 190 SL launched the philosophy of a more attainable Sport-Leicht model – a legacy that lasts to this day within the Mercedes-Benz lineup. A meticulously restored example in a desirable color combination such as this is well suited for any German-focused collection.
