"In 1954, Mercedes displayed a concept version of the 190SL at the New York Auto show alongside the 300 SL ‘Gullwing’. This concept came to market in 1955 as the 190 SL. A more approachable, less intense sports car compared to the record-breaking 300 SL Gullwing. While the 190 SL featured a carburetted 1.9 litre in-line four-cylinder engine compared to the 300 SL’s direct-injected 3 litre slant six, they shared basic engine design, suspension system, and level of detail and craftsmanship which defined Mercedes-Benz. The new engine, which shared the same bore and stroke of the 300 SL, was paired with dual Solex carburettors and produced just over 100 horsepower. This powerplant was mated with a fully synchronized four-speed transmission which sent power to the rear swing axle. The 190 SL implemented the same suspension systems as the 300 SL, albeit with a more stable low pivot point assembly, affording it confident handling and drivability without the tail-happy nature of the 300 SL Gullwing. Many of these models were delivered to the United States, where its driving demeanour and elegant styling were highly valued.
Manufactured in June 1959, the 190 SL offered here presents beautifully in the classic colour combination of black paint with red interior. The supplied correspondence and copy of the original build sheet from Mercedes-Benz, shows the car was originally supplied to Canada. The car remained in Canada, having reportedly been owned by a single family there before it was imported to the UK in 2017 by Clapham resident Mr. Singh. Mr. Singh, over the next three years, completely restored the car spending over £5,000 on retrimming the interior including Klaus Hermann carpets and hood, £20,000 on other parts and almost £30,000 on a bare metal respray in its original colour of black. The vendor purchased the car from Mr. Singh in 2020 and has enjoyed it as part of his collection ever since. He himself has spent over £12,000 maintaining and finessing this fine motorcar into what we see today. Reported to run and drive very well, this handsome 190 SL has had a lot of time and money lavished on it since it’s arrival in the UK and is ready to go for the next custodian.
Supplied with a V5C registration document and file of receipts, import paperwork and Mercedes-Benz build sheet. Ever popular and always bringing the ‘wow factor’, these beautiful 190 SL’s are forever gaining in popularity. Consigned by Will Penrose.
