In the 1950s, the Mercedes 300SL was one of the most desirable cars of the time, despite not being very accessible due to its high cost. It was for this reason that Hoffman, official importer of Mercedes-Benz in the United States, urged the parent company to produce a new car that had the elegance and sportiness of the 300SL, but with a cost accessible to a greater number of enthusiasts. Thus, the W121 project was born.
In 1955, the 190SL was presented. It soon became one of the most fascinating and sought-after roadsters of all time. It had the flatbed of the 180 saloon, shortened and stiffened, and a load-bearing body. The engine was a 1.9-litre in-line 4-cylinder that could deliver a maximum power of 105 hp. It had two Solex double-body carburettors. The engine group was housed on a front auxiliary chassis that guaranteed better soundproofing, in order to improve the quietness of the cockpit and the comfort of driving.
The car presented here, a Mercedes 190 SL of 1956 in its elegant grey leather interior, looks like a splendid Roadster of clear US origin (it was sold in the United States in 1956 as most 190 SL in circulation) perfectly restored. The restoration took place about 15 years ago, and involved both the bodywork, which was entirely repainted in its original grey colour (cod.DB186), and the interiors, which were redone in the original grey colour (cod.207) and using only leathers identical to those used during the 1956 production. The engine and the gearbox have been completely disassembled and revised in all their parts and then reassembled with great care. The car is part of a big collection of an Italian gentleman who has recently passed away, and it has always been maintained and preserved by its owner with the greatest care. A glance is enough to catch all the details of a restoration done with great professionalism and attention, typical of a collector who seeks perfection and spares no expense. Cherry on top, ASI has recognised the certification of historic car and issued the prestigious GOLD plate n.14041.
