The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster is undoubtedly one of those designs whose perfect proportions continue to inspire even half a century after its production ended.

Between 1955 and 1963, this model was considered THE Daimler-Benz sports car.

Optionally, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was also available as a coupé – with removable hardtop.

As the little sister of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, it was intended to approach the prestige of the star model (W 198 Roadster / Gullwing).

Enjoyable driving and a sense of freedom: the additional designation “SL” = “sport light” does credit to the intended driving experience.

With its 1.9 l (4 cylinders in a row), the driving performance of the “touring sports car” is perfectly tuned for its purposes.

The model has continued to impress discerning collectors.

This Mercedes 190SL Roadster, the 96th built 190 SL, was completed at the Stuttgart-based Mercedes-Benz plant in 1955, during the first month of production of the model.

This 190 SL Roadster was originally delivered clothed in a gorgeous shade of Mercedes-Benz Red with a Black leather interior. As you can see, the car still carries it’s original color combination.

In the former owner’s custody, the car has been fully and very professionally restored at Classic Car Venlo in the Netherlands with a view to making the car as competitive and reliable as possible.

Classic Car Venlo is a company who is well known in the Mercedes 190SL world.

A company with 30 years of experience and a company whereby every single part is restored in-house.

From dismantling to painting, from engine rebuilt toward the restoration or renewing of the full interior. The quality is impressive, very impressive.

The company is well known because they do not want to restore a car with compromises.

Every single part has to be as perfect as possible and that becomes immediately clear when people take a close look to this specific 190SL.

The car comes with a very beautiful and detailed restoration photo book.

The car has successfully entered and finished the 2023 Mille Miglia race. It is in a very good technical condition and is ready to race the 2024 Mille Miglia as well as participate in other prestigious events.

It is almost in a concours condition although it has done a very serious race recently.


Having been restored without looking at any expenses the 190SL is in an excellent condition.

As a consequence of the professional approach and experience of the restoration company, the 190SL is in an excellent overall order. It will be very hard to find a nicer example.

The panel gaps and fit are extremely good throughout, and the paint remains free from any blemishes and has an amazing shine.

The quality of the paint is extremely good, with no signs of use of the car. It seems that the car actually never drove since it was finished from restoration.

The chrome is as new without any damages or pitting.

Other delightful details include the rear lights that are the correct small units, the front indicator lenses are clear rather than amber, and the boot handle and number plate lights are the unassuming ones fitted to the very earliest cars.

The black folding roof fits beautifully, folds away easily and is hidden from view by a beautiful tonneau cover.


The interior is also in need of nothing, the interior is period-correct in every detail including the very early split dashboard, the absence of a clock, and the Gullwing seats (just in the first series) plus a natty side-facing rear seat.

Beautifully trimmed in Black leather, even the boot, often a neglected area on even the most carefully restored and curated cars, is in a fabulous condition. Home to the spare wheel, which is fitted with a new tyre, and the immaculate toolkit, it is neatly carpeted with the same material as that used in the cockpit.

The dashboard, dials, door cards, chrome controls and other trim are all equally impressive.


The care and attention to detail that runs like a thread throughout this amazing car extends to the car’s mechanical components.

The engine bay is immaculate, as is the underside. This is one of those cars that just gets better and better the closer you look.


When the key of the Mercedes is turned, the engine starts easily and it become immediately clear that the engine is running very strong.

This is off-course normal as the entire technical part of the car has been redone/rebuilt as well.

The doors latch shut with a precision we have rarely experienced. With a car of this quality it is easy to overlook the fact that it’s the small details that turn a great car into an exceptional one, and you will appreciate this diligence every single time you open and close a door.

Driving a 190SL gives the feeling to drive a modern car. The styling inside looks to be very classic but the drivability of this car feels very modern.

If one drives this 190SL it is just clear that these cars are made on an absolute excellent German way and due to the amazing restoration it is a superb car.

Thanks to the solid technology and the excellent driving comfort, it is the perfect companion for every classic car trip.

We certainly hope to see this car in the Mille Miglia 2024 at the start.
