After introducing one of the world's first diesel-powered production cars in 1936, Mercedes again revalorized the segment by introducing the world's first turbocharged diesel car in 1978 as the "W116" generation 300 SD Turbo Diesel. A few years later, the "W116" was replaced with the newly designed "W126." Both these cars were powered by the legendary 3.0-liter "OM617a" five-cylinder turbo diesel, only available in the North American market. Combining the best attributes of the S-Class with a dependable and economical diesel engine, it earned the award as Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1981.

The 300 SD on offer today hails from the second to last year of production, having completed production in August 1984 in wonderful Orient Red (501) over an optional Palomino leather (254) interior. Destined for the North American market, it was ultimately purchased by Carl and Sarah Wanamaker of Townsend, Delaware, and remained under their care until 2022. In June 2022, the car received a complete service by Mercedes-Benz of The Woodlands, Texas, changing the brake fluid, coolant, rear differential fluid, power steering fluid, engine drive belts, engine oil, transmission, and rear sway bar end links at approximately 35,500 miles. Shortly after this service, the Mercedes was purchased by the current owner in August 2022.

As presented today, this 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300 SD has been beautifully preserved in highly original condition. From gleaming paint, bright trim, shining plating in the engine compartment, and scrumptious leather, this car offered a near-new car experience, especially with only 35,834 miles at the time of cataloging. Completing the new car feel, the car is accompanied by its tool kit, jack, owner's manual, sales brochure, first aid kit, and original, unmounted spare wheel and tire.
