He saw American muscle cars with a thick V8 on the other side of the ocean and decided to use the giant engine of the Mercedes-Benz 600, a 6,332cc V8, for the W109. In 1968, the model appeared unexpectedly at the Geneva Motor Show.

We are talking about a performance saloon from the year 1971(!) , but what kind of specifications are we talking about? The V8 power source has the afore-mentioned displacement of 6.3-litres, with a total of 250 hp versus a weight of 1,780 kg. Not really impressive because the number of horse powers and kilos are increasingly identical nowadays. Although that does not apply to its successors, the S63 and S65. Anyway, the maximum power of the 300 SEL 6.3 is not impressive, but the performance all the more so. For example, the acceleration of 0-100 km/h takes only 6.5 seconds and is unlimited at 220 km/h. Those are figures from the good old days! It was therefore one of the first cars of Mercedes with AMG influences.
The 6.3 is capable of achieving a top speed of 220 km/h and the big limousine accelerates from 0 to 100 in an improbably fast 6.5 seconds! This Benz was faster than a Porsche 911 S or a Jaguar E-Type. This top model was also the inspiration of the current AMG.

This Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 is from the year 1971 and just had a restoration a year ago.
