The Fastest Sedan of Its Time – The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 SEL 6.3 in 1968, few could have anticipated that it would give birth to an entirely new class of automobile. Development engineer Erich Waxenberger had the brilliant idea of installing the mighty 6.3-litre V8 engine from the prestigious Mercedes-Benz 600 state limousine into the considerably more compact W109 luxury saloon. The result was nothing short of sensational. With a top speed in excess of 220 km/h and performance on par with contemporary sports cars, the 300 SEL 6.3 became the fastest production saloon of its era.

Beyond its powerful V8 engine, the 6.3 also impressed with cutting-edge technology. Air suspension, power steering, electric windows and an exceptionally high level of comfort made it the ideal choice for customers seeking to combine supreme luxury with remarkable performance. At the same time, the 300 SEL 6.3 laid the foundations for the tradition of high-performance luxury saloons that would later find its ultimate expression in the AMG models. Today, the 6.3 ranks among the most sought-after classics of the marque and is widely regarded as one of the most significant Mercedes-Benz icons of the post-war era.

The example offered here boasts a particularly fascinating history. Originally delivered new to the Netherlands, this 300 SEL 6.3 was once owned by the renowned Dutch racing driver Toine Hezemans. Hezemans won the legendary Targa Florio in 1971 and claimed the European Touring Car Championship titles in both 1970 and 1973. This distinguished provenance alone gives the car exceptional historical appeal.

The Mercedes was imported to Switzerland only earlier this year and today presents itself in an exceptionally authentic and well-preserved condition. The black leather interior was retrimmed in 2020 and complements the dark blue bodywork beautifully. The exhaust system and tyres have also been renewed. A period-style RetroSound radio has been discreetly integrated into the dashboard, preserving the car's original appearance while adding modern usability. Naturally, the 300 SEL 6.3 will be offered at auction with a fresh Swiss veteran vehicle inspection.

Combining outstanding model significance, distinguished ownership history and a highly convincing level of originality, this exceptional example embodies all the qualities that have established the 300 SEL 6.3 as one of the most desirable Mercedes-Benz classics of all time.
